SALT LAKE CITY, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The Utah Information Technology
Association (UITA) today released new data on the size of Utah's IT industry.
The new data, from the State of Utah Department of Workforce Services, shows a
total of 2,777 technology companies in Utah as of 2002. This is a 13 percent
increase since 1999. The number of IT jobs is increasing as well: as of 2002,
there were 57,442 IT employees in Utah, an increase of 34 percent since 1999.
A quote from Yahoo! Internet Life Magazine reinforces these findings: "The
Salt Lake City area made huge strides in an annual survey of America's most
Internet-savvy cities, jumping 23 places to the number six spot on this year's
list." (May, 2002)
"We are extremely proud of the growth and stature of Utah's IT industry,"
said Richard Nelson, UITA president. "The technology industry continues to
play a critical role in Utah's economy, even in the industry's current
difficult times. In fact, the average annual Utah IT salary continues to be
71 percent higher than the average Utah salary."
"Utah continues to stand out as one of the premier locations for new IT
companies and for existing business expansion," said Greg Butterfield, CEO of
Altiris, Inc., and Chairman of the UITA board. "The strong infrastructure
Utah is able to provide, together with a skilled IT workforce, makes Utah an
ideal place for IT companies to thrive and to grow."
Of Utah's 2,777 technology companies, 50 percent are professional,
scientific and technical service organizations. Twenty six percent provide
information services, with nine percent focused on retail trade, Nelson added.
