NEW YORK, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is an Olympic Tribute by
Lynn Swann and Dorothy Hamill, remarks as prepared for delivery at the 2004
Republican National Convention:
Lynn: Most of you know me as a Hall of Fame wide receiver for the
Pittsburgh Steelers. But you may not know that my career in football actually
began in dance class.
Dorothy: Most of you know me as a world champion figure skater and
Olympic gold medalist. But my career in skating actually began on a pond.
Both of us are known for our jumping ability.
Lynn: Don't forget our style and grace!
Dorothy: And like all athletes, we had a whole team of individuals who
helped us succeed. My team included my parents, my brother, my sister, and my
coach.
Lynn: As you know, my teammates included an irrepressible quarterback
and the Steel Curtain.
Dorothy: One team that we would like to honor tonight is our incredible
U.S. Olympic team who took home a record 103 medals! They left Athens in a
blaze of glory and entered our hearts forever!
Lynn: Congratulations champions!
As chairman of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, my
job is to help President Bush tap into the Olympic spirit that uplifts us and
use it to inspire everyone -- young and old -- to become physically active and
participate in sports.
I can tell you, the President practices what he preaches.
Physical fitness is a priority in his life.
Dorothy: Please try to make it a priority in yours. It is so important
for your physical and mental well-being.
Lynn: So get active, America! And remember, you have a whole team --
including the President of the United States -- behind you!
