Metrowerks Enhances the Industry's Leading StarCore Development Tool Suite With New High-Performance, Host-Target Interface

CodeWarrior 'Panther' Interface Provides Significant Performance Increase
                         For DSP Software Development

BOSTON, EMBEDDED SYSTEMS CONFERENCE, Sept. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Metrowerks
has enhanced the company's CodeWarrior Integrated Development Environment for
StarCore with a new, high-performance Host-Target Interface (HTI) technology.
The device, named Panther, provides developers with a run-control solution
that is capable of transferring data and at more than twice the speed of any
existing StarCore target interface.
The ability to interact with a running target is a critical requirement
for DSP application development. To observe and understand application
behavior under real-world conditions, developers need a new generation of
host-target interface technology. The Panther interface provides a high
performance, Ethernet-based solution optimized for the StarCore architecture.
It enables data transfer between the host computer and the on-chip emulation
module of a StarCore processor with minimal intrusion, eliminating the slow
download times and run control problems commonly associated with JTAG-based,
run-control connections. Using Panther, developers are able to dramatically
shorten the "edit/compile/download and debug" cycles associated with creating
complex DSP software.

The standard capabilities of Panther include:

-- Real-time target control and data transfer
    -- Multiprocessor based debugging support
-- Trigger In/Out support for integration with leading logic analyzers
    -- Standard TCP/IP networking support
    -- 10 Base T support
-- Real-time program trace and data acquisition
-- Support for additional Motorola DSP and MCU architectures

Combined with the CodeWarrior IDE, Panther provides a fully integrated
debugging environment for Motorola's leading family of StarCore-based DSPs,
including the MSC8101 and the recently announced MSC8102.
"The Panther host-target interface is a genuine breakthrough for
performance intensive DSP applications," said John Smolucha, Metrowerks'
vice-president of marketing. "It also demonstrates Metrowerks' leadership in
developing sophisticated hardware solutions designed to complement our
industry-leading software tools."
Metrowerks provides a comprehensive development system for StarCore
applications, which includes an MSC8101 evaluation board, the CodeWarrior
development tools, and everything required for fast setup and installation.
The development system enables a developer to begin programming on a StarCore
target within minutes of opening the box.

    Availability
The Panther host-target interface will be available in October of 2001 as
an option for licensees of the CodeWarrior IDE for StarCore DSP Version 1.0.
