QNX Announces Support for the IBM PowerPC(TM) 405GP Development System

-- New QNX BSP offers full peripheral support for IBM 405GP board.

-- Allows OEMs to combine scalability, fault-tolerance of QNX RTOS with
high performance, low power consumption of IBM PowerPC 405GP processor.

-- Small OS footprint and rich on-chip peripherals enable high-density
       network applications.

BOSTON, Embedded Systems Conference, Sept. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Responding to
the needs of OEMs developing compute-intensive network elements, QNX Software
Systems today announced the availability of a Board Support Package (BSP) for
the IBM PowerPC 405GP Development System. The new BSP enables vendors of next-
generation network equipment to combine the memory protection and fault-
tolerance of the QNX RTOS with the high performance, low cost, and low power
consumption of the IBM PowerPC 405GP processor.
The QNX BSP for the IBM 405GP Development System includes the QNX RTOS
v6.1, drivers, full peripheral support and Initial Program Load code (IPL)
with support for a SDRAM controller and on-chip memory. Together with IBM's
PowerPC 405GP, a highly integrated processor designed for networked
applications, the BSP is ideal for developing mainstream hubs, routers,
Ethernet switches and line cards.
"In today's demanding marketplace, our networking customers are being
asked to deliver carrier-grade equipment that provides both high performance
and high functionality while lowering total cost of ownership," said Dr.
Armando Garcia, vice president of networking, IBM Microelectronics. "IBM's
PowerPC 405GP delivers a rich peripheral mix, and when combined with the QNX
Network Infrastructure Platform, provides a reliable, scalable foundation for
value-added services in the core and at the edge of carrier and service-
provider networks."
"The QNX 405GP Development System BSP coupled with IBM's reference design
creates a powerful combination for networking OEMs who need to produce highly
reliable systems and get them to market quickly," said Linda Campbell, vice
president of strategic alliances at QNX. "Our collaboration with IBM means QNX
customers get an integrated, memory-efficient solution optimized for highly
available network elements."

    Pricing & Availability
The QNX 405GP Development System BSP will be included in the new QNX
Embedding SDK for PowerPC targets. The SDK will be available in September 2001
for US $4995.

    About the QNX RTOS
Scalable from high-end control planes to low-end line cards, the QNX
microkernel RTOS offers networking OEMs full memory protection, symmetric
multi-processing (SMP) and built-in distributed networking. It also provides
inherent support for high availability applications, including automatic
recovery from software failure, software and hardware hot-swap, and in-service
upgrades.
To speed the development of network elements, QNX Software Systems has
just unveiled the new QNX Networking Infrastructure Platform, a targeted
solution based on the QNX RTOS that includes protocol stacks, a high
availability toolkit, an embedding kit, BSPs, SNMP agents, a system analysis
toolkit and support for a variety of third-party development tools.
