QNX Joins Rational Unified Partner Program

-- QNX RTOS now being integrated with Rational Rose RealTime tools.

-- Combination lets developers create highly reusable, component-based
       software designs.

-- Tools significantly reduce the need to write C and C++ code "by hand."

BOSTON, Embedded Systems Conference, Sept. 5 /PRNewswire/ --
QNX Software Systems today announced that it has joined the Rational Unified
Partner Program and is integrating the QNX(R) RTOS with Rational Software's
UML-based Rational Rose(R) RealTime tools.
Using Rational Rose RealTime, QNX development teams can create highly
reusable software designs, simplify communication among team members and
significantly reduce the amount of C and C++ code they have to write by hand.
In short, they can deploy complex software applications in less time --
whether those applications are designed for network elements, in-car
computers, medical instruments or industrial control systems.
"With Rational Rose RealTime, development teams can take a top-down
approach to software design that simplifies the job of conceptualizing and
structuring complex realtime applications. When combined with QNX RTOS, this
allows our customers to structure complex applications as a set of
well-defined building blocks that can be developed, tested and reused
individually," said David Abelow, director of field enablement and alliance
marketing at Rational Software. "We're pleased to have QNX as a member of our
partner community, and to extend this added capability to our customers."
"More than ever, embedded developers are under pressure to deploy complex
software services in the shortest time possible -- without sacrificing
reliability. Together, the QNX microkernel RTOS and Rational Rose RealTime
address this problem by enabling developers to create component-based software
architectures. With component-based designs, OEMs find it easier to reuse code
across products, thus accelerating time-to-market and increasing return-on-
investment. And design teams find it easier to collaborate effectively on
time-sensitive software projects," said Linda Campbell, vice president of
strategic alliances at QNX Software Systems.

    Availability
QNX RTOS support for Rational Rose RealTime will be available in beta in
Q4 2001.

    About the QNX RTOS
Designed from the ground up for mission-critical embedded systems, the QNX
RTOS offers POSIX APIs, distributed networking, symmetric multi-processing
(SMP), and an MMU-protected microkernel architecture that allows virtually any
software component to be started, stopped or replaced dynamically.

    About QNX Software Systems
Founded in 1980, QNX Software Systems is the industry leader in real-time,
microkernel OS technology. The company's flagship product, the QNX RTOS,
provides a dynamically scalable, fault-tolerant platform for carrier-grade
products used in metropolitan, core and storage area networks. Companies like
Cisco, IBM, Siemens and Matsushita rely on QNX OS technology for its
reliability, scalability, ease of customization and ability to reduce
time-to-market. Visit http://www.qnx.com.
