QNX Ports EMANATE and EMANATE/Lite SNMP Agents

-- Dynamic architecture allows administrators to manage new, upgraded, or
       hot-swapped application.

    -- Supports SNMPv1, SNMPv2 and SNMPv3.

-- Agents to ship with new QNX Network Infrastructure Platform.

BOSTON, Embedded Systems Conference, Sept. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Network
elements powered by the QNX(R) RTOS - such as high-end routers, optical
switches, and storage area devices - can now be managed using EMANATE(R) and
EMANATE/Lite, the industry-leading SNMP agents from SNMP Research
International.
Based on a Master Agent/Subagent architecture, EMANATE allows SNMP
subagents to be loaded and unloaded dynamically at run time. As a result,
system administrators can immediately manage new applications and hardware
components, even those that have been added or upgraded on the fly. EMANATE
also comes with a development kit that lets system designers automate subagent
development.
"The runtime extensibility of EMANATE is a perfect match for the QNX
RTOS's dynamic architecture, which allows virtually any software component to
be started, stopped or replaced on demand. Using EMANATE and QNX, carriers and
service providers can maintain complete monitoring and control of their
network elements -- even when subsystems are added, hot-swapped, or upgraded,"
said Linda Campbell, vice president of strategic alliances at QNX Software
Systems.
Designed for embedded systems, EMANATE/Lite is a static SNMP agent that
includes an easy-to-use development toolkit for adding MIB (Management
Information Base) extensions at compile time. Using EMANATE/Lite,
administrators can access management information for each protocol layer
within a network element.
"With EMANATE and EMANATE/Lite, QNX customers can choose the SNMP agent
technology best suited to their needs, whether they are creating complex,
dynamically upgradable optical switches or lower-end systems that require
cost-effective network management," said Dr. Jeff Case, founder and CTO of
SNMP Research.
    EMANATE and EMANATE/Lite support SNMPv1, SNMPv2 and SNMPv3.

    About the QNX RTOS
Scalable from high-end control planes to low-end line cards, the QNX
microkernel RTOS offers full memory protection, symmetric multi-processing
(SMP), and built-in distributed networking. It also provides inherent support
for high-availability applications, including automatic recovery from software
failure, software and hardware hotswap, and in-service upgrades.
To speed the development of network elements, QNX Software Systems has
just unveiled the new QNX Networking Infrastructure Platform, a targeted
solution based on the QNX RTOS that includes protocol stacks, a high
availability toolkit, an embedding kit, BSPs, a system analysis toolkit and
support for a variety of third-party development tools.

    Availability
The EMANATE and EMANATE/Lite SNMP agents for the QNX RTOS will be
available from QNX Software Systems in Q4 2001. The agents will also be
included in the new QNX Networking Infrastructure Platform. Pricing to be
announced.
