Ralphs & Food 4 Less Raise Over $2.2 Million For Muscular Dystrophy Association

Company Officials Present Record-Breaking Donation At
                        Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Ralphs Grocery Company presented a
check for $2,238,565 to the Muscular Dystrophy Association at the annual MDA
Telethon on Labor Day weekend, September 2-3, 2001. The record-breaking
donation represents an increase of more than $100,000 over the
Los Angeles-based supermarket chain's donation last year.
The $2.2 contribution is the result of the company's annual Aisles of
Smiles campaign, which ran in all Ralphs, Food 4 Less (southern California),
Foods Co, Cala Foods and Bell Markets stores from July 30 through September 3.
During the campaign, the company asked its customers, suppliers and
employees to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association by purchasing selected
products and $1 "Aisles of Smiles for Jerry's Kids" mobiles. Employees
further contributed by participating in MDA "Dress Down Days" for a
$3 donation and by collecting sponsor donations and walking in MDA Muscle Team
Walks held in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Orange and San Diego counties.
"We are very pleased to be associated with the Muscular Dystrophy
Association and to be able to provide the organization with such a high level
of support," said Chuck Ackerman, senior vice president of sales and marketing
for Ralphs. "The Aisles of Smiles program gives Ralphs and Food 4 Less a
tremendous opportunity to give back to the community and assist those with
neuromuscular diseases."
Ralphs and Food 4 Less are long-time supporters of the Muscular Dystrophy
Association. Over the years, the two grocery chains combined have raised over
$10 million to help people living with muscle diseases and to fund research to
find a cure for the devastating disease.
"Helping in the fight to find a cure to Muscular Dystrophy is important to
both our customers and our employees," said Bob McKee, senior vice president
of sales and marketing for Food 4 Less. "They demonstrated this by purchasing
a record amount of Aisles of Smiles items in our stores and participating in
fund-raising efforts. On behalf of Food 4 Less and Ralphs I'd like to thank
every customer and employee who contributed to this year's MDA campaign."
Ralphs Grocery Company was founded in 1873 and currently operates more
than 450 conventional and price-impact supermarkets in California and southern
Nevada, from its headquarters in Los Angeles. The company is a division of
The Kroger Co., (NYSE: KR), one of the nation's largest grocery retailers
based in Cincinnati, Ohio.
