Mighty! Thrifty!: Technology Advances Create Opportunity for Diesel Performance Parts Distributors and Retailers

DIAMOND BAR, Calif., Sept. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- They're powering street
trucks running quarter-mile times under 9 seconds. They power Opel's
Ecospeedster GT, producing an astounding 113+ mpg and a top speed of 155+
mph. Audi conquered Le Mans with them, another just ripped through
Bonneville at 325 mph, and there are several national race sanctioning
bodies dedicated solely to them.
Diesels have come a long way, and they're opening doors of opportunity
for specialty equipment sellers. Today's diesel engine offers race-proven
performance AND exceptional fuel economy, thanks to technological advances
from both the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and the aftermarket.
This revolutionary powerhouse is starting to look mighty good to a
large cross section of inspired people. In fact, J.D. Power and Associates
predict that diesel sales in the U.S. will triple in the next 10 years,
accounting for more than a 10% share (approximately 2 million new vehicle
sales annually) in the light vehicle and truck marketplaces.
Currently, over 50% of diesel owners have performance exhausts,
upgraded air intakes, performance chips/computers, performance wheels and
tires, and tinted windows. 35% of the remaining diesel owners plan to buy
these items, not counting all of the other diesel products available. The
market is huge and the potential is even bigger.
Ford, Daimler-Chrysler, GM, VW/Audi, Honda, Toyota and Hyundai plan to
introduce quiet and quick, fuel efficient diesel models for their 2008 and
2009 model years that will beat all emission standards, delivering up to
60-miles per gallon.
Emission standards are changing too, with low-sulfur fuels mandated by
2010, giving the aftermarket opportunities for retro-fits and upgrades.
California requires these low-sulfur fuels by September, 2006.
The revolution is on. It's trucking down the road and is in high gear.
