MARLBORO, Mass., Sept. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA) has cleared the way for the next deployment to 11 sites
of an early display configuration of Raytheon Company's (NYSE: RTN) Standard
Terminal Automation Replacement System (STARS).
Installation of STARS Early Display Configuration Phase 2 (EDC-2) is
planned for Memphis, Tenn., and Hartford, Conn., during the third quarter
2001. Prior to the FAA's "in-service" decision, El Paso, Texas, and Syracuse
International, N.Y., airports were using the EDC-1 for controlling air
traffic. Both locations have now been upgraded and are operational with
EDC-2.
The STARS EDC is the first step in deployment of the Full STARS system
that will provide new high resolution, color displays and a new emergency
back-up system to be used in conjunction with the existing automation system.
EDC-2 adds additional functionality to the operational software and updated
computer human interface modifications requested by air traffic controllers
and system maintainers. The EDC will remain in use until the Full STARS
system replaces the existing automation system in the future.
"EDC-2 is the next logical step in the STARS deployment plan as it
provides new color displays and STARS infrastructure to additional terminal
facilities," said Bill Voss, the director of the FAA's Terminal Business
Service unit. "The advantage of deploying EDC-2 at a limited number of sites
is that it provides a rapid and easy transition path to Full STARS, which is
nearing completion of development."
Once STARS completes development, it will provide ATC automation for any
size facility. Major advantages of the STARS system include new high-
resolution color displays that are 30 percent larger than the displays they
replace. STARS provides a high reliability, open architecture design with
significant built-in growth capability allowing for easy and rapid
incorporation of new data processing enhancements and new technologies planned
for the terminal area.
STARS is a joint procurement for the FAA and the Department of Defense.
Raytheon is under contract to develop and install STARS at up to 173 FAA
terminal area control facilities and up to 199 military radar approach control
facilities and associated ATC towers over the next decade.
With headquarters in Lexington, Mass., Raytheon Company is a global
