Fatboy Slim Takes Home Six MTV Moon Men
'Lady Marmalade' Wins Best Video of the Year
NEW YORK, Sept. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The "2001 MTV Video Music Awards,"
honoring the best in music video, demonstrated once again that Rock and Opera
can co-exist as the show returned to the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln
Center in New York City on Thursday, September 6. Jamie Foxx hosted the
ceremony where he kept the one-liners going with the audience anxiously
waiting to find out which celebrity was going to be zinged next. Repeat air
dates of the broadcast include Saturday, September 8th at 1:30 PM (ET/PT) and
Sunday, September 10th at 11 AM (ET/PT) and 8 PM (ET/PT).
Fatboy Slim topped the list of winners with six Moon Men for his video
"Weapon of Choice," nabbing Best Direction in a Video, Best Choreography in a
Video, Best Art Direction in a Video, Best Editing in a Video, Best
Cinematography in a Video, and Breakthrough Video. *NSYNC followed with three
awards for their video "Pop" winning Best Group Video, Best Dance Video, and
Best Pop Video. Winning a total of two Moon Men, Christina Aguilera, Lil'
Kim, Mya, and Pink won the coveted Best Video of the Year, as well as Best
Video from a Film, for their video "Lady Marmalade."
The night opened with host Jamie Foxx performing his version of an aria,
where he sang about the celebrities and musicians prevalent in today's current
events. Following his operatic moment, he continued with a monologue that
kept the laughs coming as he gave his take on different news worthy people
from President George W. Bush to Britney Spears & Justin Timberlake to Gary
Condit to A.J. McLean to the Jacksons, which included Jesse Jackson and Samuel
L. Jackson. At the end of his opening monologue, Foxx introduced the
Backstreet Boys who made their first television appearance since McLean was
released from rehab. The Backstreet Boys introduced the "Best Hip-Hop Video"
award, the first award of the evening.
The 2001 MTV VMAs included a tribute to the late R&B singer, Aaliyah. In
this tribute, Janet Jackson read a letter written by one of Aaliyah's fans and
Missy Elliott, Ginuwine, and Timbaland gave a moving speech. In addition,
Rashad Houghton, Aaliyah's brother, made the first public statement from the
family since her untimely death.
The stage began to sizzle early on in the night, as Jennifer Lopez
performed a sexy, hip-shaking salsa dance and then partnered with Ja Rule to
sing their #1 single, "I'm Real." Linkin Park continued the momentum with a
high-energy performance which included a DJ breakdown from The Executioner.
Next, Alicia Keys impressed the audience with her classical piano performance
of "Fur Elise" followed by a moving rendition of "Fallin'." Showing off his
dancing abilities, Christopher Walken introduced *NSYNC, who turned it up a
notch when they did an energetic performance of "Pop" with a special
appearance by Michael Jackson. The night continued with Jay-Z performing
"H.O.V.A. (Izzo)" which opened with basketball players, choreographed by
Savion Glover, showing off their amazing dribbling talents. Continuing the
night of great live performances, Staind gave a heartfelt performance of their
song, "Fade." Dedicating her performance to Aaliyah, Missy Elliott was joined
by Nelly Furtado, Ludacris, and Trina, which had Elliott coming down to the
stage from a chandelier and Nelly sliding out of gigantic head resembling
Elliott. Appearing as if they were suspended in mid-air, U2 performed an
arousing medley of their songs "Elevation" and "Stuck in a Moment." Finally,
as if the night could not get any better, an exotic Britney Spears, dressed in
vines, showed that she ruled the jungle when she performed "I'm A Slave 4 U"
for the first time ever, featuring a live tiger and a live snake.
In addition, Carson Daly presented U2 with the Michael Jackson Video
Vanguard award in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the music
video medium. Upon receiving the award, U2 attributed their success to the
surviving members of the Ramones, who inspired the band. The tributes
continued when Kid Rock introduced the legendary Mick Jagger of the Rolling
Stones, who gave out the "Best Video of the Year Award" to the "Lady
Marmalade" ladies.
New additions to the eighteenth annual award show included MTV.com's "Last
Fan Standing" -- where two lucky fans earned the right to present this year's
Viewer's Choice Award as voted on by MTV.com users. In addition, the MTV2
Award is a brand new category that was added for the first time ever. The
MTV2 Award featured nominees -- artist, duo, or group -- with the best overall
achievement whose video premiered exclusively on MTV2 and subsequently
received significant hand-picked and/or heavy rotation on MTV2.
Other presenters of the night included Christina Aguilera, Mary J. Blige,
Jon Bon Jovi, Destiny's Child, Andy Dick, P. Diddy, Snoop Dogg, Dream, Eve,
Johnny Knoxville, DMX, Chris Kattan, Lil' Kim, Mandy Moore, Moby, Mya, Julia
