CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Genomic Profiling Systems (GPS)
made its debut before medical industry executives and investors at the
Emerging Medical Technologies Conference. The Company's lead technology,
Direct Imaging(TM), enables physicians to treat patients more efficiently and
effectively by earlier detection and identification of disease pathogens
(bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites). These improvements can save lives,
reduce healthcare costs, and improve patient outcomes by accelerating the use
of appropriate antimicrobial therapy. They can also lead to more judicious use
of broad-spectrum antibiotics in a medical era threatened by the emergence of
deadly antibiotic-resistant microbes.
Established in 1998, GPS is a privately held, development stage life
science company, located in Cambridge, MA. GPS's proprietary technology
platform has broad potential applications in the medical, pharmaceutical, and
food industries. Designed from inception to meet the specifications of
physicians and laboratories, Direct Imaging(TM)offers much faster turnarounds
than traditional culture tests and greater sensitivity than existing
immunoassays. At the same time, it is significantly less costly and complex
to use than the much-heralded emerging molecular technologies, whose actual
market penetration has been slow. GPS technology also does more. It can scan
clinical samples for multiple disparate pathogens in one test (e.g., both
viruses and bacteria) and can rapidly determine antimicrobial
sensitivity/resistance.
GPS has completed proof-of-principle studies for the Direct
Imaging(TM)technology and has a U.S. patent application on file covering the
core technology. GPS is focusing initially on the infectious disease
diagnostics market, a market that is expected to grow to $4.8 billion
worldwide and $2.5 billion in the U.S. by 2003. GPS will be seeking to raise
its initial round of external financing later this year. To learn more about
