New group to address needs of new communications professionals
at kickoff event September 22
ROYAL OAK, Mich., Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Women in Communications of
Detroit (WIC), affiliated with a national organization founded in 1909 and
devoted to the needs of women in communications-related fields, today
announced the formation of a New Professionals subgroup. The vision of this
group of women is to address the needs of metro Detroit communication
professionals with fewer than five years' experience.
Four recent Eastern Michigan University graduates are spearheading the
efforts: Casey Frazee, Lisa Gibala, Dana Lyons and Lori Vail. Michigan's
declining economy coupled with the high amount of graduates with
communication-related degrees is making it increasingly difficult for recent
graduates to find jobs locally. The WIC New Professionals group seeks to help
young professionals successfully navigate through these challenges to find
suitable employment in their chosen field.
"Some of us are employed and some of us are not. We want to help other
recent graduates who also are looking for work in this tough economy," says
Lori Vail, who received her communications degree from EMU in April and
freelances for Jennifer Arapoff of JSA Business Communications. "Our group
creates a support system for young women communicators to network and have
opportunities to get a leg up on the competitive job market in southeast
Michigan."
The group will host its kick off event at Copper Canyon at 27522
Northwestern Highway east of Telegraph Road in Southfield on Thursday,
Sept. 22 at 6:30 p.m. The event is open to all women interested in
communication-related fields, regardless of employment status. Admission is
$15 for members and $20 for non-members or guests, which includes appetizers.
To RSVP or for more information, call the WIC reservation line at
(248) 652-1460.
"The WIC-Detroit board is very supportive of the New Professionals group,"
said Karen (Stewart) Spica, APR, chairman of WIC-Detroit. "This program will
be beneficial to both recent graduates and those entering the communications
field later in life. It also offers a new way to provide value to WIC-Detroit
members."
