Also, RMI.NET announced a partnership with Covad Communications to launch
RMI.NET's new Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) service -- high-speed access to
the Internet for data and video. As part of the launch, RMI.NET will donate a
portion of each nationwide sale of DSL service to the Five Points Media Center
for Internet technology development.
In addition, RMI.NET will donate DSL service to the Five Points Media
Center, located at 2900 Welton St. in Denver. Both companies noted that
online publishing would continue to grow in importance as a branch and a
research tool of the news media. RMI.NET and Covad have expressed a desire to
provide students at the center with the best tools possible to master this
area of journalism profession.
"The Five Points Media Center works to promote greater access and
diversity in the news media, and its students need continued funding and the
best training tools possible to successfully enter their new careers," said
Douglas H. Hanson, chairman and chief executive officer for RMI.NET.
"We wanted to find a way to match our expertise with a worthy charitable
organization in Denver. The Five Points Media Center provides a perfect
outlet for our effort because the Internet continues to become a major growth
arena for the news media," Hanson said.
The Five Points Media Center, founded in 1992 as a non-profit
organization, applies the power of telecommunications, print journalism and
online publishing for the public good. The center works primarily with women,
people of color and the economically disadvantaged through educational and
vocational programs aimed at helping its students prepare for a career in the
news media.
The Five Points Media Center sponsors numerous Team Media Workshops during
the year and provides the host site for the CNN Student Bureau. In addition,
the center is home to Denver Community Television, KUVO-FM and KBDI-Channel
12, a Denver based public television station. It also hosts the Five Points
Telecommunity Network, which provides eight neighborhood sites equipped with
