U.S. Navy Awards Raytheon $12.9 Million Contract for Minehunting Sonar

    TEWKSBURY, Mass., Sept. 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/--
Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) has been awarded a $12.9 million contract with
the U.S. Navy's Coastal Systems Station, Panama City, for two AQS-20
Minehunting Sonar systems. This award builds upon an existing Navy contract,
bringing the total number of AQS-20 systems under contract to 10.
"The advanced technology of AQS-20 provides reliability, performance and
significantly greater search rates to identify and localize mine threats,
assuring fleet access and mission success," said Dan Smith, president of
Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems. "This contract demonstrates our
customer's confidence in our quality products and reinforces our solid
position as an industry-leading provider of mine warfare solutions."
AQS-20 is an advanced minehunting sonar system that incorporates five
separate sonars in a compact, lightweight and hydrodynamically stable vehicle
that can be towed from a helicopter or unmanned vehicle. The system combines
signal processing and computer algorithms with sidescan, forward looking, and
gap filler sonars to detect, localize and classify objects from the sea floor
to the surface, in a single pass. The system can classify all mine types,
including bottom, close tethered, tethered and volume mines.
Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems will develop and deliver AQS-20 sonar,
hardware, electronics, processors and towed body components. In addition, the
contract includes an option for two Volume Search Sonar assemblies that extend
the system's volume search to a range substantially greater than typical
systems. Development, test, integration, and production of component hardware
and processors will be performed at Raytheon's Portsmouth, R.I., facility.
Based in Tewksbury, Mass., Integrated Defense Systems is Raytheon's leader
in mission systems integration. With a strong international and domestic
customer base, including the U.S. Missile Defense Agency and the U.S. Armed
Forces, Integrated Defense Systems provides integrated air and missile defense
and naval and maritime warfighting solutions.
Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN), with 2002 sales of $16.8 billion, is an
