Pioneer in evidence-based medicine develops research use only polyclonal
antibody for detecting DJ-1 protein in human and rodent models
DEDHAM, Mass., Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- In a new contribution to the fight
against Parkinson's Disease, Signet Laboratories, Inc., a pioneer in evidence-
based medicine (EviMed), today announced the release of its DJ-1 RUO
polyclonal antibody, a potential diagnostic for predicting the emergence of
the disease.
"Parkinson's Disease currently affects over a half-million people in the
U.S. alone, with 50,000 new cases diagnosed each year," said Dr. Richard D.
Gill, President and CEO of Signet. "Unfortunately, Parkinson's is a very
difficult disease to detect, and neurologists must rely on an evaluation of
symptoms, followed by administration of anti-Parkinson's drugs to see if the
patient responds. This is a long and difficult process, and sometimes leads to
incorrect diagnoses that prevent a patient's effective treatment."
DJ-1, a multifunctional protein implicated in many diseases such as
prostate cancer and reproductive disorders, has been recently identified as
causative of early-onset, autosomal recessive familial Parkinson's disease.
"Increasing use of rodent models for Parkinson's research has created a
critical demand for a product with rodent DJ-1 reactivity," said Joe
Bertelsen, Neuroscience Product Manager at Signet. "Signet's rodent reactive
DJ-1 polyclonal antibody, along with the previously released DJ-1 monoclonal
antibody, gives researchers a valuable panel for detecting DJ-1 protein in
transgenic, knock-out, and wild type models."
About Signet Laboratories, Inc.
Signet Laboratories, Inc. is a pioneering evidence-based medicine (EviMed)
company that is committed to developing and commercializing predictive
diagnostics and preventive drugs and therapies for critical disease states.
Evidence-based medicine is the treatment of diseases prior to their full
manifestation, with the goal of reducing their occurrence and preventing
disease progression by early identification of patients with increased risk
factors.
Drawing on long experience in developing diagnostic assays and antibodies
for disease detection and treatment, Signet's mission is to create novel
diagnostics and drugs for patients at risk for cancer, sepsis and renal
failure (SARF), neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's
and Huntington's, and prion diseases such as "Mad Cow" and vCJD.
In addition to diagnostics, drugs and therapies, Signet offers a complete
product line of over 800 manufactured antibodies, ELISA kits, detection
products and accessories in an FDA registered facility. Signet products are
