New Lucent VPN Firewall Products Leverage Bell Labs Technologies and
Feature Deep Packet Inspection, Rules-Based Routing, and Advanced VoIP
Functionality
BOSTON and MURRAY HILL, N.J., Sept. 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Fall
VON tradeshow -- Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) today announced two
additions to its award-winning Lucent VPN Firewall portfolio, the VPN
Firewall Brick(R) 700 and the VPN Firewall Brick(R) 1200 for large
enterprises and service providers. Leveraging unique Bell Labs innovations
throughout, both products feature advanced functionality such as high
performance packet handling, deep packet inspection, an innovative Bell
Labs-developed operating system, system failover that ensures continuity
for voice over IP (VoIP) and data sessions, built-in denial of service
protections, hardware-based IPSec VPN acceleration, and best in class
benchmarking -- all at a cost point significantly lower than most similar
products in the market today.
Both of these products were also designed to support real-time,
latency-sensitive IP-based multimedia services such as VoIP and IP
videoconferencing. One of the key innovations in this area is the
implementation of a technology called Dynamic Pinholing that uses Layer
Seven Filtering to recognize IP communication packets and dynamically open
ports on the system to move the packets only between the initiation point
and the endpoint, closing the ports when the call is terminated. This is a
powerful improvement over the current model for IP-based voice traffic
which entails a firewall device permanently or temporarily "opening" a
range of ports to allow IP voice calls. The control of dynamic pinholing
reduces the chance that malicious hackers can exploit these open ports to
gain entry to a Lucent-protected network through this technique.
Complimenting the introduction of these two new VPN/firewall devices,
Lucent today also announced the availability of version 9.1 of its Lucent
Security Management Server, a powerful easy to use centralized management
tool that allows network managers to control thousands of VPN/firewall
devices and hundreds of thousands of concurrent VPN tunnels from a central
location.
Lucent Security Management Server version 9.1 is particularly
significant in its implementation of a new Bell Labs-developed feature
called Rules Based Routing that enables the Lucent VPN Firewall Brick to
perform routing based on protocols and forward the packets, depending on
the type of traffic, to the appropriate third party security appliance such
as anti-virus scanning, spam filtering, URL blocking, content filtering,
etc. This enables the Lucent device to seamlessly interoperate with any
third party best-in-class solution to provide maximum flexibility and
interoperability, enabling traffic segmentation across security zones and
freeing individual network components from unnecessary processing loads.
"Bell Labs designed and configured these two new security appliances to
address a wide range of enterprise and service provider applications
ranging from corporations with dozens of remote locations and thousands of
'teleworkers,' all the way up to carriers offering VPN/firewall services as
a managed security service to their enterprise customers," said Joe
Raccuglia, General Manager, Lucent VPN Firewall, Bell Labs. "The Brick 1200
is also ideal for use in a carrier's network to protect its
mission-critical IP network elements from malicious hacking and denial of
service attacks."
Both the Brick 700 and Brick 1200 feature integrated high-speed VPN,
VoIP security, VLAN, Packet Data Gateway and virtual firewall capabilities,
as well as built-in IDS/DoS protection and high network performance at a
breakthrough price. In addition, the devices offer an intrinsically secure,
transparent layer-2 bridge that outperforms other firewalls; central
staging and secure remote management for integrated, one-console control
over thousands of units and users; and a high-availability architecture
that eliminates any single point of failure.
The Brick 700 supports 1.7 Gbps firewall performance, 425 Mbps 3DES
(Data Encryption Standard) VPN performance and 350Mbps AES (Advanced
Encryption Standard) VPN performance with built-in encryption accelerator
cards. The platform also features eight 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports and
supports up to 7,500 simultaneous VPN tunnels, 4,094 VLANs, 350 virtual
firewalls and 1 million simultaneous sessions.
The Brick 1200 is available in a standard and high performance 1200 HS
model. The standard model supports up to 3.0 Gbps firewall performance, 1.1
Gbps 3DES VPN performance and 1.1 Gbps AES VPN performance with the
built-in encryption accelerator card. The platform also features eight
10/100/1000 Ethernet ports and two mini-GBIC SFP Gigabit ports. It supports
up to 10,000 simultaneous VPN tunnels, 4,094 LANs, 500 virtual firewalls
and 2 million simultaneous sessions.
The Brick 1200 HS supports up to 4.5 Gbps firewall performance, 1.7
Mbps 3DES and 1.7 Gbps AES VPN performance with the built-in encryption
accelerator card. The platform also features fourteen 10/100/1000 Ethernet
ports and six mini-GBIC SFP Gigabit ports. It supports up to 20,000
simultaneous VPN tunnels, 4,094 VLANs, 1,100 virtual firewalls and 3
million simultaneous sessions.
