DALLAS, Sept. 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Affiliated Computer
Services, Inc. (NYSE: ACS) today announced that it is facilitating the
Emergency Prescription Assistance Program (EPAP), now activated for
residents in southern Louisiana in the wake of Hurricane Gustav.
The EPAP program, established by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid
Services (CMS), processes claims for prescription medication and qualifying
medical equipment to individuals without health insurance living in, or
evacuated from, declared federal disaster areas. Prescriptions and medical
equipment are available through a robust nationwide network of
participating pharmacies.
To receive assistance, eligible Louisianans must provide one of the
following: a new prescription from a licensed health care practitioner, a
current prescription bottle, a prescription phoned in by a licensed health
care practitioner or proof of an existing prescription. Claims made between
September 2, 2008 and October 2, 2008 are eligible under the EPAP program.
ACS' innovative technology and systems ensures that individuals who
qualify for the program get real-time support and can quickly receive
assistance.
"A real benefit to the EPAP program is that people who are affected by
an emergency have one less thing to worry about when disaster strikes
because wherever they are evacuated to, their prescriptions will be readily
available," said Tim Conway, senior vice president and managing director of
ACS Federal Solutions. "ACS is uniquely positioned to offer such a service
and be an operational partner with CMS to deliver on its goal."
Because the EPAP program uses existing channels of how people receive
their prescriptions, it is seamless to users and can be instantaneously
activated.
"The EPAP program and the work of ACS means that pharmacies can now
play an important role in being first responders in a streamlined
pharmaceutical industry process," said Steve Konsin, ACS vice president.
