Mallinckrodt's Nellcor(R) Oximetry Business Achieves Record-Breaking FY2000 Sales of Stand-Alone Monitors

Growth Driven by Rapid Market Adoption of N-395 Oximeter with
                 Oxismart(R) XL and SatSeconds(TM) Technology

PLEASANTON, Calif., Sept. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The Nellcor Oximetry Business
of Mallinckrodt Inc. (NYSE: MKG) today announced that sales of stand-alone
Nellcor monitors during fiscal year 2000 increased 59% over 1999. Nellcor
Oximetry set a new sales record volume with over 16,500 units sold.
The Nellcor N-395 Pulse Oximeter, introduced in October 1999, represents
nearly 11,000 of the total oximeters sold. "Customer response to our new N-395
monitor has been overwhelming," said Chris Jones, director of Marketing,
Nellcor Oximetry Business.
Noting that over half of total sales occurred in the fourth quarter, Jones
added, "The timing of the sales speaks to the momentum of this technology.
An increasing number of customers are seeing the benefits of the Nellcor N-395
during challenging motion conditions and how the technology helps improve
clinicians' ability to monitor their patients."
Two recent studies led by Dr. Hartmut Gehring at the University of
Luebeck, Luebeck, Germany and Dr. Michael Jopling of St. Ann's Hospital,
Columbus, Ohio, show that the N-395 oximeter performs best with respect to
SpO2 accuracy and alarm handling compared to other tested oximeters under
challenging motion conditions. The research will be presented at the American
Society of Anesthesiologists conference in October. Featuring the
groundbreaking Oxismart(R) XL Advanced Signal Processing and SatSeconds(TM)
Alarm Management Technology, the N-395 is designed to address the challenge of
monitoring oxygen saturation during motion artifact.
News of the strong stand-alone monitor sales comes on the heels of the
Nellcor Oximetry Business' announcement of its seventh straight year of
double-digit increases in shipments of Nellcor oximetry modules to original
equipment manufacturers (OEM) during FY2000. Over 115,000 Nellcor sensor-
compatible monitors were shipped this past fiscal year including Nellcor
oximeters, OEM modules and Nellcor compatible licensee monitors.
