September 11 Quilt Project Flag on Display in Washington, DC From September 11 - 14, 2002

Events in DC Include Display of Flag at Memorial Tree Park and Panel-Making
Workshop at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History

    WASHINGTON, Sept. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The September 11 Quilt Project, a
gigantic American flag made up of individually designed pieces of cloth sent
in from people across the country and around the world, is on display in
Washington, D.C. from September 11 - 14 from 9:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. each day.
The display of the quilt project flag showcases thousands of people's lasting
and personal contributions to the nation's healing process after the tragic
events of September 11, 2001 and is a celebration of the beauty, spirit and
resolve of the people of America.
The flag is on display in Memorial Tree Park near the Capitol lawn
(Constitution Avenue between 1st and 3rd streets, NW). The flag, which
measures 120' x 60', or 1/3 of a football field, is laid out in sections,
allowing people to view the individual quilt panels by walking through the
stars and stripes.
In addition to the display near the Capitol lawn, the story of The
September 11 Quilt Project is included in the Smithsonian's National Museum of
American History's new exhibition "September 11: Bearing Witness to History,"
on view from Sept. 11, 2002 - Jan. 12, 2003. Using interactive kiosks
visitors will be able to experience the personal stories of people who were
affected by the events of Sept. 11, including the directors of the Quilt
Project.
    On September 13 - 14, from 12 - 4 P.M., the National Museum of American
History will host a tour and panel-making workshop. Visitors can view an 80'x
5' stripe with over 300 panels sewn onto it, decorate a panel to donate to The
September 11 Quilt Project and talk to project directors.

The September 11 Quilt Project, a non-profit unity project founded by a
Denver mother and daughter, joins two enduring symbols of American life - the
American flag and our country's rich tradition of quilting. Since September
11, 2001, the significance of the American flag has broadened, becoming among
other things, a symbol of the nation's determination to rebuild. The
September 11 Quilt Project offers a positive way for individuals, families and
schools to contribute to the nation's rebuilding, and continue the healing
process. To date, the flag has more than 3,800 panels sewn into the flag, on
the way to a goal of 7,000 panels upon completion. For more information on
the project or to learn how to donate a panel, please visit
