Top Consumer Electronics Brand in China Selects Broadcom's Low-Cost VoIP
Chip for New Residential IP Phone
BOSTON, Sept. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- (Fall 2006 VON Conference &
Expo) Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in
semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced that
its single-chip, low-cost Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone
solution has been selected by TCL Communication for its newest residential
IP phone (scheduled for production shipment in the fourth quarter of 2006).
The Broadcom(R) residential IP phone chip (BCM1190) enables manufacturers
to economically build IP phones for the home with advanced features such as
full duplex speaker phone and high-fidelity audio, which were not
previously available in low-cost IP phones.

These new IP phones represent the integration of a traditional analog
phone and a VoIP Terminal Adapter (TA), which is commonly in use in today's
VoIP deployments worldwide. The key benefit is that these new IP phones are
less expensive and offer more features than the combination of an analog
phone and a VoIP TA.
"Asia's rapidly expanding residential broadband infrastructure opens
the door for the deployment of VoIP in millions of apartment units in major
cities throughout the region," said Patrick Sullivan, Vice President and
General Manager of Broadcom's VoIP business unit. "Broadcom's BCM1190
residential IP phone chip enables the high voice quality, robust feature
set and low cost that will appeal to consumers who choose VoIP as their
home telephone technology."
"Broadcom's industry leading VoIP chips and software have enabled TCL
to develop a cost-effective IP phone offering features and functionality
that are completely new to this class of phone," said Gu Gong, General
Manager of TCL Communication. "TCL's latest residential IP phone will
provide our customers with a high quality voice experience at an economical
price point, which will allow consumers to embrace VoIP."
TCL's new IP phone, Model TCL-IP(16), is based on Broadcom's BCM1190
residential IP phone chip and includes features such as session initiation
protocol (SIP) call signaling, hands-free full-duplex speakerphone
capabilities, three-way conference calling and high-fidelity audio. The new
TCL IP phone also features a software-based Ethernet switch and two
physical Ethernet interfaces that support the connection between a
broadband DSL or cable modem and a PC.
TCL Communication Equipment (Huizhou) Co., Ltd is a leading Chinese
company that specializes in the researching, manufacturing and selling of
communication equipment. TCL products also sell in overseas markets in over
50 countries and regions, with more than 100 million users. TCL maybe

Product Information
Broadcom's BCM1190 low-cost consumer IP phone chip is a highly
integrated, high performance VoIP processor that is targeted at residential
and small office/home office (SOHO) Ethernet IP handsets. The BCM1190
provides business class IP phone features at consumer price points,
including high fidelity audio support and full duplex speakerphone. This
enables service providers to deliver more differentiated services than
their existing solutions that use the combination of a terminal adapters
plus analog phone.
The BCM1190 device features a single MIPS(R) processor core with
specialized VoIP instructions that eliminate the need for a separate
digital signal processor for voice applications. This reduces the size and
cost of the device, resulting in end products at price points that will
further drive the adoption of consumer VoIP applications. The BCM1190
supports the following speech codecs: G.711, G.722, G.722.1, G.723.1/A,
G.729A/AB, G.726, and GSM-EFR. The Broadcom residential IP phone chip is
currently shipping in production and pricing is available upon request.
To accelerate customers' time to market, Broadcom has developed the
BCM91190 reference design, which includes its VoIP xChange(TM) software
suite and board support package, including all necessary drivers and
software development tools. Reference designs are available today.
