Premier Online 'Going-to-College' Resource Helps Bring Scholarship
Information to Students and Parents from Coast-to-Coast
RESTON, Va., Sept. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Wiredscholar.com, the most inclusive
online resource for planning and paying for college, today announced its
official sponsorship of The Scholarship Coach National Tour, a nationwide
campaign to educate college-bound students and their families about obtaining
scholarships to finance their education. The tour will be led by Benjamin
Kaplan, the 22-year-old author of How to Go to College Almost for Free. It
kicks off in New York City next week and will bring its message to more than
20 major metropolitan areas across the country through the end of October.
Wiredscholar.com was launched in spring 2000 by Sallie Mae, the nation's
leading provider of education funding, and is the most comprehensive Internet
destination for college preparation, selection, evaluation, application and
financing information and interactive tools.
"Sallie Mae and wiredscholar.com are proud to sponsor Benjamin in his
quest to provide America's families with the resources they need to help
garner college scholarships," said Paul Carey, executive vice president,
Sallie Mae. "Benjamin's mission is consistent with ours-making education
accessible and affordable for all students."
Kaplan became a college-scholarship advocate after receiving more than
two-dozen scholarship awards totaling nearly $90,000-money he used to finance
nearly all of his Harvard education. During the tour, Kaplan, known on the
Internet as "The Scholarship Coach," will share secrets from his book and his
own experience in free workshops at local high schools, bookstores and
libraries for students, educators and parents. Kaplan and representatives
from wiredscholar.com will travel from city-to-city in a 40-foot "scholarship
motor coach" featuring interactive scholarship-finding resources.
Wiredscholar.com will kick off Kaplan's Plant a Scholarship Seed (PASS)
program by awarding 10, $1,000 scholarships to current high school, college,
graduate or continuing education students. Students can get more information
about the award on wiredscholar.com. In addition, Kaplan will challenge
businesses and organizations to invest in their communities by creating new
scholarships by unveiling new partners in the program at each tour stop.
"Wiredscholar.com's sponsorship of the tour allows me to deliver our joint
message of education affordability to thousands of college-bound students and
their parents across the country," said Kaplan. "Its generous contribution to
the PASS program has provided a solid foundation that will encourage other
organizations to recognize the importance of funding local scholarships. I'm
pleased that the tour is aligned with such a reputable source in college
preparation and financing."
