Boston Scientific Receives European Approval to Market Precision(TM) Spinal Cord Stimulation System for Treatment of Chronic Pain

Precision SCS System offers long battery life and precise pain control in a
                                small implant

NATICK, Mass., Sept. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Boston Scientific
Corporation (NYSE: BSX) announced today that it has received CE Mark for the
Precision(TM) Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) system, Europe's smallest
neuromodulation system for the treatment of chronic pain. The Company plans
to begin introducing the product in Europe this year, with a full launch in
2006. The Precision SCS system has received approval from the U.S. Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) and was launched in the U.S. in March of this year.
The CE Mark for the Precision SCS system included an expected battery life
for its recharcheable battery implant of at least five years, and in many
cases up to 25 years of service. The longer battery life claim has not yet
been approved in the U.S. Extended battery life offers long-lasting therapy
and enables fewer battery replacement surgeries.
"We are pleased to bring this revolutionary technology to patients outside
the U.S. who are suffering from chronic pain," said Jeff Greiner, head of the
Neuromodulation Group at Boston Scientific. "Our proprietary Precision system
represents a significant advance in pain management and is the first and
smallest (22cc) rechargeable device approved for use in the U.S. and Europe."
The Precision SCS system treats chronic pain by precisely delivering tiny
electrical signals to the spinal cord that mask pain signals as they travel to
the brain, creating instead a tingling sensation called paresthesia. Spinal
cord stimulation is prescribed for patients with chronic pain in the limbs,
trunk and back who have not received adequate pain relief from physical
therapy, pain medications, prior surgeries or other methods.
