HOUSTON, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Anadarko Petroleum Corporation
(NYSE: APC) today announced a record-setting flow rate from its sub-salt field
discovery, Tanzanite, located at Eugene Island 346 in the Gulf of Mexico. The
Tanzanite No. 1 discovery tested 21,917 barrels of oil per day (BOPD) and 29.7
million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d) of solution gas. This is the highest flow
rate ever achieved from an Anadarko-operated well and is one of the highest
rates ever tested by industry in the shallow waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
The discovery is located about 75 miles offshore Louisiana in 314 feet of
water.
For this flow test, the Company perforated a 50-foot interval of the 450-
foot continuous hydrocarbon column. The stabilized flow rate of 21,917 BOPD
was achieved from the 50-foot section through a 1.25-inch choke with a flowing
tubing pressure of 2,679 psi. API oil gravity was 21.9 degrees. A second
jack-up rig was brought in for the test to hold the extensive test equipment.
Data from the test -- on the characteristics and natural gas content of
the oil, on reservoir permeability and on flow capacity of the well -- are
crucial to design of production equipment on the platform for the Tanzanite
Field. Design work on the platform is underway and the Company is negotiating
the construction contract. The platform is expected to be completed in about
24 months, with first production estimated in the third quarter of 2000.
Anadarko will set a sea-floor drilling template (well guide) on location and
has contracted with Rowan Companies, Inc. to drill the first Field development
well in the next two weeks.
On July 29, 1998, Anadarko announced Tanzanite as a significant sub-salt
discovery containing reserves of at least 140 million energy equivalent
barrels. Drilled to a total depth of 14,350 feet, the well encountered 450
feet of continuous hydrocarbon pay. Three additional zones totaling
approximately 70 feet of net pay are also present in the wellbore.
Anadarko owns a 100-percent working interest in the Tanzanite Field.
