Awards Event in October Will Honor Winners For Innovative Energy Education
Proposals
LA PALMA, Calif., Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- California schools will be
buzzing with extra energy this school year thanks to BP's first-ever A+ for
Energy grant program. BP, a global energy provider, today announced that
1,075 California K-12 teachers will receive $2 million in grants to teach
energy and energy conservation in the classroom. A celebratory awards event
will be held on Tuesday, October 5 at Universal Studios' Globe Theatre in
Los Angeles.
The A+ for Energy program awards individual grants of $5,000 and
$10,000 directly to educators who submitted applications proposing classroom,
after-school, extra-curricular or summer activities focused on energy
education and/or energy conservation. The program, launched in May, was
developed to meet the needs of K-12 teachers in California who want to expand
their core curriculum with energy education activities. A complete list of
winners is included at the end of this release.
"We had an excellent response with approximately 5,163 teachers from
49 counties applying for an A+ for Energy grant," said Irene Brown, director
of California Community Relations for BP America, Inc. "The creativity
presented in the applications was very impressive and our judging panel found
it challenging to choose the winners from such a spectacular talent pool. It's
wonderful to see such great enthusiasm from educators who want to teach their
students about energy and conservation."
Applicants were encouraged to think outside of the box. Winning
applications proposed educational programs in subject areas such as science,
math, reading and language arts.
"With the help of talented California teachers, it is our hope that these
grants will serve as a spring board for a life-long educational journey that
will inspire today's youth to become responsible, energy conscious adults,"
said Ross Pillari, president of BP America, Inc.
Applications were reviewed and selected by an independent panel of
20 judges comprised of California state educational and environmental
non-governmental-organization leaders. A judging rubric was devised by Science
Educator William Tarr Jr., to ensure a fair process. Applications were judged
for originality, energy content and opportunities for the students to assume a
leadership role in the project.
BP is partnering with the National Energy Education Development (NEED)
Project to provide compelling curriculum content that is aligned with
California Department of Education Curriculum Standards for the core subject
areas of science, math, and social studies throughout all grade levels. NEED
provides energy education training and curriculum to K-12 teachers and
students throughout the United States.
As part of its A+ for Energy grant program, BP will also award grant
recipients with a scholarship to attend a five-day training conference hosted
by the NEED Project to be held in Long Beach in July 2005. The all-inclusive
scholarship will cover travel, meals and lodging expenses as well as a NEED
Science of Energy Kit valued at $500. The kit includes classroom tools and
materials to help educators teach energy.
"The A+ for Energy grant program is giving many teachers the opportunity
to boost their energy curriculum to a whole new level," said Mary Spruill,
program director for the NEED Project. "The training and tools that these
teachers are now able to obtain will enhance the students' learning
experience, making it something they will remember well into their adulthood."
