American Stores Company Announces Quarterly Dividend
 
    SALT LAKE CITY, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The Board of Directors of
American Stores Company (NYSE: ASC) today declared a quarterly cash dividend
on American Stores Company common stock of 9 cents per common share.  The
dividend is payable October 7, 1998, to shareholders of record on
September 25, 1998.
