Mallinckrodt Establishes Independent Rep Network to Work with Alternate Care Sales Team

ST. LOUIS, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Mallinckrodt Inc. (NYSE: MKG) has
established a national network of independent manufacturers representatives
for its comprehensive portfolio of alternate care products to expand its
service and accessibility to customers, it was announced this week by Gerald
R. Mattys, vice president and general manager of the company's Alternate Care
business.
"The addition of approximately 30 independent manufacturers reps to
supplement our direct sales organization means we will be able to provide
greater coverage in the marketplace," Mattys said. "With an annual growth
rate of over 10 percent in the overall alternate care market, it is important
that we provide the resources to meet our customers needs for service and
training. We are also interested in growing with this strong and important
market and know we have the products to help our customers make a positive and
essential contribution to improving healthcare for respiratory patients at
home."
Mallinckrodt's Alternate Care business is a consolidation of numerous
familiar and respected respiratory care products and technologies, including
Puritan Bennett ventilators, oxygen therapy, sleep, asthma management and gas
products; Shiley tracheostomy products; Nellcor pulse oximetry sensors and
monitors; and DAR breathing systems.
The Mallinckrodt Alternate Care sales team is organized into five regions,
each headed by a regional manager responsible for the independent reps and the
direct sales force. Responsibility for servicing many larger metropolitan
areas rests with the direct sales force; the independent reps will cover all
other areas throughout the United States.
Ralph Germscheid, vice president, Alternate Care sales, said the
independent representative network consists of leading manufacturers
representative organizations across the country. Among them are Baltimore,
Maryland-based Phoenix Medical Distributors, led by Jeffrey Katz, Bob Rice and
Cheryl Westad; Wayne Shepard, based in southern California; and Mark Hoffer,
based in northern Illinois. Wayne and Mark were associated with independent
organizations that represented Aequitron portable ventilators when that
company was acquired by Nellcor Puritan Bennett in 1996. Mallinckrodt
acquired Nellcor Puritan Bennett in August 1997.
"We have completed a comprehensive training program for our dynamic new
sales organization and are certain they will deliver quality service to match
our quality products," Germscheid said. "We have strong customer and
technical service organizations that back up our sales teams, enabling us to
deliver a comprehensive single-source respiratory offering to home,
rehabilitation clinic and other nonhospital customers.
Based in St. Louis, Missouri, Mallinckrodt Inc. has three healthcare
product groups -- Respiratory, Imaging and Pharmaceuticals. The company
operates in more than 100 countries and had fiscal 1999 net sales of
$2.6 billion. The Mallinckrodt website address is http://www.mallinckrodt.com .
