TUCSON, Ariz., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company
(NYSE: RTNA, RTNB) has been awarded a $125.9 million U.S. Army TOW-Fire and
Forget (F&F) engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) contract.
The EMD contract will be completed within 42 months at Raytheon's Missile
Systems business unit in Tucson, Ariz. A key supplier on TOW-F&F is Aerojet
in Socorro, N.M., which provides support for warhead and propulsion sections
of the weapon.
"TOW-F&F is intended to address an urgent need for U.S. Army 'light
forces' to be combat effective against any future threat," said Bill Leonard,
Raytheon Missile Systems vice president for the land combat product line.
The current Army plan is to procure 4,000 TOW-F&F missiles and 1,841
applique kits to upgrade the Improved Target Acquisition System to the fire-
and-forget configuration.
TOW-F&F upgrades the world's premier anti-tank weapon, the TOW (Tube-
launched, Optically tracked, Wire-guided) missile, with the integration of an
advanced focal plane array imaging infrared (FPA IIR) seeker. The IIR seeker
and software will provide automatic target tracking and the elimination of the
TOW wire and will significantly increase soldier survivability and overall
system lethality. The TOW-F&F is designed to engage any target that the
gunner can see, day or night, facing battlefield contaminants or
countermeasures.
