Communities across the country band together to fight crime
ARLINGTON, Va., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National
Sheriffs' Association (NSA) and the National Crime Prevention Council
(NCPC) are excited to announce that more than 125 communities across the
country will be participating in Celebrate Safe Communities this October.
October is Crime Prevention Month.
Earlier this year, NSA and NCPC put out a call for action, encouraging
law enforcement agencies and community groups nationwide to join forces and
stand up to crime. Communities of all sizes have answered that call, and
this October more than 125 sites in 32 states will hold events in an effort
to create safer neighborhoods and put a stop to the rising tide of
violence.
"It's encouraging to see so many communities getting involved in this
initiative," said NCPC President and CEO Alfonso E. Lenhardt. "Safety
remains a major concern for too many of America's communities. We are
pleased that so many citizens are willing to work together and with local
law enforcement to watch out and help out in the fight against crime."
"It's great to see so many communities already embracing Celebrate Safe
Communities," said NSA Executive Director Aaron Kennard. "Partnerships
between communities and law enforcement are vital to public safety. We are
thrilled to see that communities across America are building events to
highlight and strengthen those partnerships. We can't wait to see how
Celebrate Safe Communities grows from here."
Neighborhoods, schools, local businesses, and law enforcement agencies
all over the country have banded together to organize events and activities
for Celebrate Safe Communities. Some local initiatives include:
-- Safety fairs, demonstrations, and summits
-- Membership recruitment drives to help launch new Neighborhood Watch
groups
-- Workshops for teens and their parents
-- Safety camps for children
-- Neighborhood/block parties
-- Promotion of crime prevention and community safety tips in the local
media
-- Town hall meetings to discuss community safety priorities
-- Award ceremonies to thank volunteers
-- And many more
