CUDAHY, Wis., Sept. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Ladish Co., Inc. (Nasdaq: LDSH) (http://www.ladishco.com) reports that it has
been awarded a patent for its "SuperCooler" technology. According to Kerry L.
Woody, Ladish's president and CEO, "The SuperCooler allows engineers to refine
the cooling process within heat treatment cycles for aerospace forgings,
significantly improving results. This allows Ladish customers to design
components with a better balance of mechanical properties and reduced residual
stresses than has been previously possible."
Heat treatment is essential for imparting desired mechanical properties
into aerospace components. Traditional methods of heat treatment include air,
water, oil and ducted-nozzle air quenching. However, each approach constrains
the range of mechanical properties engineers can impart to end products
because of the residual stresses that remain in the work piece after
quenching.
In contrast, the SuperCooler has been designed to control the cooling
rates over the surface of complex aerospace components using tailored
heat-transfer coefficients. The SuperCooler enables Ladish to significantly
improve its control of the residual stresses and mechanical properties in each
specific area of the forging. "Our customers are excited about these selective
cooling capabilities," says Woody. "This technology is especially beneficial
to gas turbine engine manufacturers looking to push the envelope in hot
sections of engines, thereby improving operating efficiencies and
performance."
The SuperCooler can also provide cost savings because engineers can design
parts in more near-net configurations. Many critical jet engine disks are made
from nickel-based wrought alloys or powder metallurgy alloys, which are
extremely expensive. Every pound reduction saves not only the cost of the raw
material, but also the cost of removing the material in subsequent machining
operations.
The SuperCooler can process components up to 50 inches in diameter
weighing as much as 2000 pounds.
Ladish Co., Inc. is a leading producer of highly engineered, technically
advanced components for the jet engine, aerospace and general industrial
markets. Ladish is headquartered in Cudahy, Wisconsin with operations in
Wisconsin, Oregon and Connecticut. Ladish common stock trades on Nasdaq under
the symbol LDSH.
