Printronix Introduces EPC-Compliant Smart Label Developer's Kit for RFID Pilots

The unique solution will help vendors comply with the RFID smart-labeling
requirements of Wal-Mart and other major retailers

CHICAGO, Frontline's International Supply Chain Week, Booth 1211, Sept. 16
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Printronix Inc. (Nasdaq: PTNX), the leading
manufacturer of integrated enterprise printing solutions for the supply chain,
today introduced an exclusive smart label developer's kit for radio frequency
identification (RFID) pilots. Printronix's developer's kit uses its
pioneering T5000e thermal printer and RFID tags from Alien Technology Corp.,
to foster a developer's environment for the printing and encoding of smart
labels targeting pilot programs at the nation's top retailers.
According to Andy Chapman, chief technology officer and senior vice
president of engineering and product marketing, Printronix, the developer's
kit fills a void in the emerging RFID market.
"There is a lot of anticipation about what RFID will be able to do in the
future, but limited information in terms of how to actually implement the
technology now," Chapman said. "We are working with users to help them define
their RFID strategies by creating a complete smart label developer's
environment for them. The developer's kit provides an easy-to-use, versatile
solution for migrating their existing labeling environment to one enabled for
RFID."
RFID technology employs radio waves to identify individual items
automatically and is expected to explode within the retail market. With this
technology, an individual product is can be identified by an electronic
product code (EPC) stored on a microchip, which is attached to an antenna,
called a RFID tag. This RFID tag is embedded into a smart label, which can be
affixed to a pallet, case or product. The smart label enables the chip to
transmit the identification information to a reader. The reader converts the
radio waves returned from the RFID label into a form that can be passed on to
computers and peripherals.
Printronix's developer's kit contains everything necessary to begin the
encoding of smart labels: a Printronix T5000e thermal printer, which is a
Web-enabled, industrial-grade thermal bar code printer designed for exacting
label applications; an RFID UHF encoder; two rolls of smart labels; ribbon;
application notes; reference designs; technical support; programming manuals;
and software migration tools that permit the seamless encoding of smart
labels. These tools include a suite of applications that automatically
extract bar code data fields and allow them to be simultaneously written into
the RFID tag. This application suite is extremely flexible and permits users'
RFID data to match their migration needs.
    The kit also includes Printronix's PrintNet(R) Enterprise, a Web-enabled
remote network print management system that provides instantaneous visibility
to every network printer and allows users to simultaneously configure an
unlimited number of Printronix printers. This edition of PrintNet Enterprise
also supports the additional RFID encoder capabilities.
"With this release, we expect to provide valuable assistance to the RFID
pilot teams of the industry's top retail suppliers and help establish industry
standards for RFID printing," Chapman said.

    Pricing and Availability
The smart label developer's kit from Printronix now is available for
ordering and starts at $7,995. It can be ordered directly from Printronix.
Deliveries are targeted to begin in October.
