Red Cross Helping Last Georgia Shelter Residents With Housing Transition

Clients moving from shelters to longer-term, family-friendly housing

ATLANTA, Sept. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Red Cross will complete
helping Hurricane Katrina evacuees in Georgia move from congregate shelters
into more family-friendly, longer-term housing by Thursday, September 22.
"Moving Red Cross clients from shelters into family-friendly housing is an
important step in their recovery," says Harvey Cain, the Red Cross' shelter
coordinator. "Our initial primary focus is providing for our clients'
immediate disaster relief needs-shelter and food. Now, we are helping them to
transition into the next phase of their lives by providing them with temporary
housing assistance."
In addition to housing assistance, most evacuee families have already
received Red Cross financial assistance, and they continue to be eligible for
Red Cross health, mental health and information and referral services.
The Red Cross is working with many families individually to help them
create a recovery plan which includes housing needs. The housing options
include temporary housing within Georgia or joining family and friends in
other states. Both options offer ongoing support services from the Red Cross
and other agencies to help them find permanent housing, jobs and school
registration for children.
Since Hurricane Katrina struck, the American Red Cross has provided safe
haven for more than 200,000 survivors in 896 shelters across 27 states and the
District of Columbia. In Georgia, the Red Cross opened 19 shelters for
evacuees, housing more than 2,500 at one point.

All American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by
voluntary donations of time and money from the American people. You can help
the victims of Hurricane Katrina and thousands of other disasters across the
country each year by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross
Disaster Relief Fund, which enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food,
