Scios Announces 15 Abstracts to be Presented at Sixth Annual Heart Failure Society of America Scientific Meeting

    SUNNYVALE, Calif., Sept. 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Scios, Inc. (Nasdaq: SCIO) today announced that 15 abstracts related to
Natrecor(R) (nesiritide), are being presented next week at the Sixth Annual
Scientific Meeting of the Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA), the premier
meeting of clinicians that treat heart failure in the United States.
"This meeting is a great opportunity for clinicians to learn more about
the continued research being conducted with Natrecor, and to answer some of
their questions as they incorporate Natrecor into everyday practice," said
Darlene P. Horton, M.D., Vice President of Medical Affairs at Scios. "Of
particular interest are studies that discuss the positive effects of Natrecor
on coronary artery vasodilation and cardiac performance in both acute and
chronic settings and its potential for pharmacoeconomic benefits."
Several abstracts describing the unique pharmacologic properties of BNP
(B-type natriuretic peptide) also will be presented by members of Dr. John
Burnett's laboratory at the Mayo Clinic.
"BNP has long been recognized as an important cardiac hormone. The
availability of BNP as both a diagnostic and a therapeutic has escalated
important research on the role of BNP in the prevention and treatment of
various forms of heart disease," added Dr. Horton.
Scios also is supporting two CME-accredited satellite symposia during the
meeting. The first, entitled "Emerging Heart Failure Management Strategies
from a New Drug Class," will take place on Sunday, Sept. 22, from
1:00 - 3:00 p.m. ET. The second symposium, entitled "The Role of BNP for
Diagnosis and Management of Heart Failure," will take place on Monday,
Sept. 23, from 6:30 - 8:00 a.m. ET.
On Monday, September 23, the following posters will be available for
viewing from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. ET. Oral presentations by the authors
will occur between 5:45 and 6:45 p.m. ET.
