Pentagon Employee Returns Cap One Year After 9/11 Attack

ARLINGTON, Va., Sept. 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- At an informal memorial
overlooking the Pentagon crash site, Army Systems Integrator for Medium
Tactical Vehicles Jeff Brenton today presented Stewart & Stevenson with an S&S
baseball cap that was discovered during recovery efforts following the
September 11, 2001, terrorist attack.

The cap, which was a gift from Stewart & Stevenson, was on display in
Brenton's Pentagon office until American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the
building. Several months later, the damage assessment team searching the
wreckage for personal effects discovered Brenton's Stewart & Stevenson cap.
The cap was in pristine condition, tainted only by a faint aroma of smoke. As
a goodwill gesture, Brenton who administers the family of Medium Tactical
Vehicles distribution plan, offered to return the cap to his long-time Stewart
& Stevenson associates Bill Chadbourne, Vice President of Government Affairs &
Marketing and Harold Morgan, Marketing Manager for the Tactical Vehicle
Systems Unit.
Stewart & Stevenson has manufactured and supported the Family of Medium
Tactical Vehicles (FMTVs) for the U.S. Army since 1991.
"All of us at Stewart & Stevenson are deeply honored to support the men
and women of the U.S. Army who risk so much to defend our freedom. This cap,
which has seen its own 'hazardous duty,' will serve as the centerpiece of our
display memorializing the heroism resulting from the tragic events of
September 11th," said Chadbourne as he accepted the cap on behalf of Stewart &
Stevenson. Morgan presented Jeff Brenton with an FMTV denim shirt signed by
the workers at Stewart & Stevenson's Sealy, TX, facility where the FMTV is
produced.
Brenton, an Arlington, VA, resident, was in a staff conference that was
interrupted at 9:43 AM when terror struck. He recalls, "There was one
extremely loud detonation, which we felt as much as heard, followed by a dull
rumbling noise. There was a bump under the floor, the walls separated and
then snapped back, the windows blew in and the ceiling rained down upon us,
filling the room with dust. We later learned that the 'bump' was actually the
nose gear of the airplane blasting through the office immediately below us."
As dark, oily smoke and orange flames filled the hallway, Brenton and his
colleagues followed the fire drill evacuation plan and escaped to the central
courtyard before seeking haven in the south parking lot. His group suffered
only minor injuries from falling debris and smoke inhalation.
