News Conference Announcing Relief Efforts Scheduled for Tuesday,
September 20 at 11:00 a.m. at Little Rock Baptist Church
DETROIT, Sept. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Little Rock Baptist Church in Detroit is
making 357 housing units available to victims of Hurricane Katrina. The homes
are spread all over the Metro Detroit area and are ready for occupancy. Rev.
Jim Holley, pastor and head of the 70 year old church, is hosting a news
conference at Little Rock Baptist Church located on Woodward Avenue between
Holbrook and Clairmount at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 20.
"We are doing all that we can to help our displaced brothers and sisters
whose lives have been devastated by Hurricane Katrina. The need of the hour
is a concrete, 3-5 year plan that helps the evacuees fully re-build their
lives in the Metro Detroit area," said Rev. Holley. "Access to job training
and placement are crucial components in this plan since these elements provide
a stable long-term source of income and security in their distressed lives.
"They need a hand-up, not a hand-out, and Little Rock Baptist Church is
proud to be able to contribute meaningfully. I look forward to a team of
urban ministers to come together and embark on this crucial effort," he added.
The 357 housing units are ready for occupancy but some of them need
refrigerators, cooking stoves and basic furniture. Many of the evacuees are
currently staying in local area hotels and await permanent housing
opportunities.
Little Rock Baptist Church has been actively engaged in community-based
activities throughout its 70-year history and has about 3,200 members.
