Sun-Netscape Alliance Announces iPlanet(TM) Unified User Management Suite

Momentum Grows as Cutler Hammer and Adelphia Cable Select
iPlanet Software for Centralized User Information Control

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Sept. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The Sun-Netscape Alliance
(Alliance), a leading provider of e-commerce applications and Internet
infrastructure solutions, today announced the iPlanet(TM) Unified User
Management Suite, a complete solution for centrally managing user account
information in extranet and e-commerce applications. Powered by the iPlanet
Directory Server, the suite provides a single point of account control for
user profiles, access policies, preferences and security credentials such as
passwords and digital certificates across enterprise systems linked with
suppliers, partners and customers in the exploding Net Economy.
The Alliance today also announced that Cutler Hammer and Adelphia Cable
join a growing list of companies choosing iPlanet software for centralized
user management and underscores widespread customer momentum for Alliance
infrastructure solutions.
Designed to leverage a common user management infrastructure, the iPlanet
Unified User Management Suite enables rapid deployment of new web services,
differentiated levels of security, and reduced administrative costs of
managing user information in multiple directories. The suite bundles together
four infrastructure products with the iPlanet Directory Server, including
iPlanet Certificate Management System, iPlanet Meta-Directory, iPlanet
Delegated Administrator, and Netegrity SiteMinder, a third party policy
management server. The suite is priced at $15 per extranet user and is
expected to be available in October 1999.
"Customers are looking for a centralized solution for user management that
enables them to fully exploit the rapid proliferation of extranet and
e-commerce applications," said Stuart Wells, senior vice president of
infrastructure products for the Sun-Netscape Alliance. "With this new suite,
customers are able to make user management a more integral part of their
business and compete more effectively in today's Net Economy."
With the growth of today's e-commerce and hosting services, user
management has undergone a paradigm shift of scale and strategic value. User
management is no longer focused solely on employees, but also suppliers,
partners, distributors, customers and others through increasingly complex
Internet networks created to improve productivity, customer service and time
to market. Unified user management solves the problem of duplicate and
fragmented user information across ERP systems, e-mail, HR, security
applications, and web servers as a centralized repository of data that is
shared by all legacy and web-based systems.
The directory is the cornerstone of the iPlanet user management suite. It
also relies heavily on iPlanet Certificate Management System for public key
infrastructure (PKI)-based user authentication, iPlanet Meta-Directory for
joining and updating user information from disparate directories and
databases, iPlanet Delegated Administrator for customer self-service account
management, and Netegrity SiteMinder for user policy management and web single
sign-on.
The suite allows companies to dramatically simplify administration,
enabling such streamlined activities as one-click account creation and
deletion, automatic certificate issuance and revocation, and instantaneous
propagation of updated user profiles, policies and privileges across all
accessible systems. Alliance user management software is also proven to
handle the scalability, performance and 24x7 requirements of large extranet
applications -- Boeing, Bell Atlantic, American International Group (AIG) are
a few examples -- with directory support for more than 50 million users and
5,000 queries per second.
"Alliance user management software is core to the new infrastructure we
are building for our e-commerce business," said Chuck Webb, manager,
commercial systems at Cutler Hammer, a leading supplier of electrical control
products and power distribution equipment. "By leveraging the security
features and unified directory, it forms the backbone for managing our
electronic relationships with our distributors and suppliers."
"The Alliance's user management software gives us the flexibility to
redirect much of the account administration for our hosted messaging service
back to customers," said Ken Gianella, senior manager of internet services at
Adelphia Cable, a leading provider of cable TV and web hosting services. "As
customers are able to add, move and change e-mail accounts themselves, service
calls drop and this really helps the bottom line, for both them and us."
