September is Newborn Screening Awareness Month

Maternity Boutiques Offer Free Screening to Customers

SAN BRUNO, Calif., Sept. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Expectant parents should find
time to add one more thing to their already busy schedules: Request expanded
newborn screening for their new baby. Expanded newborn screening can detect
inherited disorders in newborns that may otherwise go undiagnosed, leaving
babies at risk for serious complications, mental retardation, or even death.
Newborn screening was first introduced in the 1960s and has had a
tremendous impact in protecting newborn health. Since then, states have
individually developed their own newborn screening programs, most of which
screen for only six to eight disorders. NewScreen (http://www.newscreentest.com), a
new test available to expectant parents for less than $100, expands that list
to close to sixty manageable disorders and can improve the lives of thousands
of children every year.
Jana Klein, a certified genetic counselor from San Francisco is expecting
twins and both of her new babies will receive expanded screening. "As a
genetic counselor, I know that very rare things do happen to ordinary people,"
she says. "My husband and I want to know as much as we can because the
disorders detectable by NewScreen are treatable if you catch them early."
One in every 200 babies is born with a disorder that can be detected by
NewScreen. In celebration of Newborn Screening Awareness Month, selected
maternity boutiques are giving away free NewScreen to customers during the
month of September. Participating retailers include:
Japanese Weekend: San Francisco, Newport Beach, CA, and Plano, TX
    L'Attesa: Roslyn, NY

NewScreen is a time-sensitive test and it is important for expectant
parents to make arrangements before they give birth. Learn more about
