FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Sept. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Fort Lauderdale aviation
attorney Eugene Steele has called for the immediate resignation of FAA
administrator Jane Garvey in view of the events of the September 11 tragedy.
Steele said, "I have been a critic of the administrator before her
appointment because I felt that someone with practical aviation experience
was needed for this position. The FAA has been the subject of constant
criticism. In my opinion the buck stops at the Administrator's desk."
Steele, a 32-year airline pilot for a major airline and former FAA
attorney refused to talk about hijacking security training offered to pilots.
He did comment, "It is clear that our current approach does not work.
"In this case it appears to me that an absolute rule that cockpit access
must be denied under all circumstances including harm to cabin crew and
passengers must be in effect. Such a rule is similar to one where we do not
negotiate with terrorists. This rule should be well publicized and followed
without exception.
"Airline pilots have been aware of terrorist threats on our home ground
for well over a decade. It is ironic that Jane Garvey was director of Logan
International Airport, one of the airports used by the hijackers."
Steele did apply for the position currently held by Garvey and has an
application pending for that position. Steele said, "Lawsuits will follow
and they will be successful."
Steele commented, "My heart goes out to all those who are experiencing
this fear and pain. My prayers are with the president."
