PENNDOT Begins Hi-Tech Traffic Information

PENNDOT, West Penn AAA and Metro Networks
                      Create PENNDOT Information Center

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The PENNDOT Information Center, the
official source of interstate traffic information in the Pittsburgh area,
begins transmitting traffic reports next week as a result of a partnership
between PENNDOT, West Penn AAA and Metro Networks.
On Monday, September 24, 2001, West Penn AAA will report on traffic
conditions on KDKA Radio from the center, replacing its traffic tower
location. Metro Networks and their affiliated stations will begin reporting
on traffic conditions October 2, 2001.
"By creating the PENNDOT Information Center, the motorists we serve now
have the most timely, accurate and reliable information regarding traffic and
construction on the interstate system around Pittsburgh," stated Ray Hack,
district engineer.
The center, located in PENNDOT's district headquarters in Bridgeville, PA,
monitors 50 cameras along the Interstate Highway System including the
Churchill area to downtown Pittsburgh, downtown Pittsburgh to the Campbells
Run exit of I-279/ Parkway West and the Perrysville interchange of I-279
North.
This effort is part of PENNDOT's incident management system that detects
and responds to breakdowns and other incidents along interstate roads. The
management system also helps alleviate congestion by initiating rapid
response to situations impeding traffic flow.
The Information Center is one of a number of vital communication tools
PENNDOT intends to use to inform motorists of highway alternate routes
through the Fort Pitt Bridge and Tunnel construction zone. The outbound
lanes of the bridge and tunnel will close from April through August of 2002.
The inbound lanes of the bridge and tunnel will close between April and
August of 2003.

Bridge and Tunnel Rehabilitation Project and other PENNDOT projects at
