VERNON HILLS, Ill., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Telular Corporation
(Nasdaq: WRLS) today reported that its products are being used in the regions
damaged by Hurricane Katrina to provide reliable communications for emergency
personnel and relief workers as well as displaced residents and businesses.
"Almost immediately after the extent of the storm damage became evident,
Telular's authorized dealers began providing its products to people needing to
quickly establish communications in that area," said Mike Boyle, president and
chief executive officer for Telular Corporation.
The company explained that one common use of Telular products is to
provide basic telecommunications capability for mobile command centers,
including voice, fax and data. Not only are these being supplied to emergency
management organizations in the affected region, they are coming from
volunteer teams as far away as New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and even Utah.
"We also directly offered a quantity of our products at no cost to
wireless carriers to aid in the relief effort," added Mr. Boyle. "At least one
large carrier accepted our offer and is using our products in mobile command
centers and for public use in temporary housing facilities."
Telular fixed cellular products include a desktop phone model that looks
just like an ordinary business or home phone, except that it has an antenna
which connects the device directly to a cellular base station. There is also a
terminal model that has a pair of phone jacks that connects ordinary phone
equipment like phones, fax machines and personal computers directly to the
cellular network. Both products emulate the fixed line telephone company
providing the familiar dial tone and effectively substituting for fixed line
service.
