VeriSign(R) Wireless IP Connect Solution Being Trialed by Net2Phone Will Link Mobile and WiFi Networks for Consumers

Subscribers to use mobile devices to switch between WiFi and cellular networks

BOSTON, Fall VON, Sept. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- VeriSign, Inc.
(Nasdaq: VRSN), the leading provider of intelligent infrastructure services
for the Internet and telecommunications networks, today announced that
Net2Phone, a leading Voice over IP (VoIP) enabler for service providers, has
started a trial of the VeriSign(R) Wireless IP Connect Service.
Net2Phone empowers broadband service providers with an alternative to
traditional phone line through its VoiceLine VoIP service, which routes calls
through the Internet. Using the VeriSign Wireless IP Connect Service, select
trial members will be able to receive and place calls over a WiFi network or a
mobile carrier network while using a single device and phone number.
"This new market trial will enable broadband operators to accelerate the
deployment of the triple threat -- voice, data and wireless services -- for
consumers," said Tom Kershaw, vice president of next generation services,
VeriSign. "By combining VeriSign's Intelligent Infrastructure with Net2Phone's
VoiceLine service, Net2Phone's customers will benefit from having a reliable,
high-quality calling option that combines landline services, the lower cost of
voice-over-Internet protocol (VoIP) calls and the convenience of mobility."
VeriSign Wireless IP Connect Service provides a single, cellular-WiFi
interconnection point that resolves interoperability issues between disparate
networks and facilitates the delivery of end-to-end, next-generation features.
The service allows cellular handsets to register as Internet Protocol (IP)
devices when near a Wi-Fi signal, thus enabling consumer to make and receive
cost-effective VoIP calls.
According to a Yankee Group report published in March 2005, more than 70
percent of U.S. households have at least one person using a mobile phone. An
estimated 60 percent of these consumers make long distance calls and 36
percent make local calls using their mobile phones.
"People are always looking for more economic, flexible means of
communicating," said Joe Morris, senior vice president of product strategy at
Net2Phone. "This trial with VeriSign is a great example of how we are working
to provide a cost-effective service that will give our partners the ability to
deliver new features to their customers, such as enabling convergence of
mobile communications services on a single device."
The trial with Net2Phone is expected to run through the end of the year.
The VeriSign Wireless IP Connect Service is currently available for evaluation
and testing.
