DALLAS, Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Global Industrial Technologies'
(NYSE: GIX) Harbison-Walker Refractories division has announced the closing of
its eighth manufacturing plant as part of an ongoing integration of recently
acquired A. P. Green Industries. The latest closure will be Global's Calhoun,
Georgia, plant, which had been used to produce special shapes and other
monolithic products for use in the chemical, ferrous, and non-ferrous metals
industries.
Refractories are heat and chemical resistant ceramics used to line
industrial furnaces, ladles, kilns, incinerators, and other types of heat
processing and containment vessels. Refractory markets include the iron,
steel, aluminum, copper, cement, petrochemical, chemical processing, glass,
and waste incineration industries.
Other refractories plants which Global has decided to close are located in
Rockdale, Illinois; Sulphur Springs, Texas; Fulton, Missouri; Smithville,
Ontario, Canada; Gary, Indiana; and two plants in Bessemer, Alabama. The
closures are part of Global's strategy to see H-W achieve some $25 million in
annual synergies and operational savings. Products, which had been made at
these eight facilities, will continue to be produced, and distributed by H-W,
at other plants in North America. The Green acquisition has positioned the
133-year-old company as the leading manufacturer and distributor of refractory
products in the Western Hemisphere.
After the eight closures, H-W will continue to operate 25 plants in North
America, three in Mexico, four in South America, and one each in Germany, the
United Kingdom and Indonesia.

advanced industrial products supporting high-growth markets worldwide.
