CROTON, Mich., Sept. 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Consumers Energy and
Michigan Historical Commission officials today unveiled State Historical
Markers at the utility's Croton and Hardy hydroelectric generating dams on the
Muskegon River.
"Hydropower is an essential component of Consumers Energy's and Michigan's
development history, and it remains an important part of our electric
generation mix today," said Robert A. Fenech, Consumers Energy's senior vice
president of nuclear, fossil and hydro operations.
"Consumers Energy was a true pioneer in the development of
hydroelectricity early in the twentieth century, transmitting electricity long
distances from the dams to the population centers of Grand Rapids and Flint,
where electrification of homes and businesses was beginning to take shape,"
said Thomas Truscott of the Michigan Historical Commission.
The Croton Historical Marker is located in an area overlooking Croton Dam
just north of Croton-Hardy Road, near its intersection with Elm Ave. The
Hardy Historical Marker is located in Operator's Village Park, on 36th Street
at the east end of Hardy Dam.
The Croton Hydroelectric Generating Dam began operation in 1907. It is
capable of generating 8,800 kilowatts of electricity, enough to serve a
community of about 4,900 people. The plant is located in Newaygo County's
Croton Township.
The Hardy Hydroelectric Generating Dam began operation in 1931. It is
capable of generating 30,000 kilowatts of electricity, enough to serve a
community of 16,600 people. Hardy Dam is located in Newaygo County's Big
Prairie Township.
Consumers Energy, the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy (NYSE: CMS),
provides natural gas and electricity to more than six million of the state's
nearly 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties.
