WASHINGTON, Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- 1999 is the jump-off year for ADSL in
North America, according to The Strategis Group's latest study, Strategis
dataBank(TM): ADSL CPE Modem Manufacturers and Shipments. The report predicts
more than 900% growth in ADSL consumer premises equipment (CPE) modem
shipments to North America in 1999 compared to 1998. This striking growth
rate is partly due to a concerted effort by U.S. incumbent local exchange
carriers (ILECs) to develop and promote their ADSL offerings.

Units Shipped
1998 = approximately 60,000

"We've been watching the deployment of ADSL capability in ILEC Central
Offices, and now we're seeing incumbents' strong efforts to market that
capacity," says Adrianne Brandt, consultant with The Strategis Group. "With
Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLECs) and cable modem operators making
strides in broadband access markets, the ILECs couldn't afford to wait any
longer to make their move."
While North America is now the world leader in ADSL modem shipments,
countries in Europe and Asia-Pacific are showing increased interest in ADSL.
Both regions are expected to lag behind North America by one to two years, but
are projected to be significant ADSL players in the near future.
