Business Group Honors Local Computer Troubleshooters as Minority Tech Firm of the Year

EAST CHICAGO, Ind., Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Northwest Indiana's Computer
Troubleshooters franchise, owned by Luis Arriaga, was recently selected as the
Minority Technology Firm of the Year Award by the Northwest Indiana Minority
Business Opportunity Committee.
Arriaga, who serves small-business and residential clients in East
Chicago, Whiting, and Hammond, received the award last week. He launched his
Computer Troubleshooters USA franchise in January 2002. The company provides a
full range of computer services, including repair, networking and upgrading --
basically whatever needs done -- at the customer's location.
Since starting his Computer Troubleshooters franchise, Arriaga has been
devoted to providing affordable services to the clients who live in the
low- to middle-class area he serves.
"I'm not doing it to get rich," Arriaga said. "It's satisfying to help out
when I can."
Arriaga said there is sometimes as much as a $20-an-hour increase in the
price of computer services 25 minutes away in downtown Chicago. He often won't
even charge for quick fixes, simple errors that take five or 10 minutes to
remedy -- a child who accidentally removes a file or program or forgot a
password.
"Luis is more than deserving of this award," said Chip Reaves, national
director for Computer Troubleshooters USA. "Not only are his technical skills
superior, but his giving nature and dedication are true assets to the
community."
Prior to establishing his Computer Troubleshooters franchise, Arriaga
specialized in database programming and networking, working for companies
including communications giant SBC and Trinal Inc., which specializes in
project management, consulting, and software design and development.
After 20 years in an office job, Arriaga longed for something different.
"It was just one of those itches you get," he said. "Now I have more of a
variety."
A typical day can include anything from repairing crashed systems to
custom-building software to installing routers, Internet connections or virus
protection.
Computer Troubleshooters USA is the ideal answer for small businesses,
which often can't afford to hire a full-time IT staff person. There were some
22.9 million small businesses in existence in the United States in 2002,
according to the U.S. Small Business Administration. And more than 85 percent
of these companies conduct business over the Internet, making it crucial that
computer systems perform optimally and connectivity is intact.
Computer Troubleshooters USA handles a range of computer services
including popular ones like helping users with Windows, hardware dilemmas, and
virus protection, especially important when viruses can hit unexpectedly.
With a quick phone call, Computer Troubleshooters will show up at your
business or home and quickly tend to your IT needs, allaying your nerves when
your computer is acting up and you're on deadline and potentially losing
business by the minute.

Australian husband and wife Wilson and Suzanne McOrist, who had previously
owned a 200-franchise business selling bookkeeping software, founded Computer
Troubleshooters in Coffs Harbour on the New South Wales north coast in 1997.
Computer Troubleshooters USA launched in 1999.
The company has more than 250 franchisees worldwide, including more than
100 in the United States. In January 2002 Entrepreneur magazine ranked
Computer Troubleshooters USA the #1 Tech Support franchise. Computer
Troubleshooters USA specializes in providing services to small businesses -
companies with up to 50 computers.
