Coveted R&D Magazine 100 Award Goes to Unique Environmental & Safety Technology for the Geothermal Energy Industry

Inventor Credits CalPine and Caithness for Trying Something New

SANTA ROSA, Calif., Sept. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Low Emissions Atmospheric
Metering Separator (LEAMS) for geothermal energy development has joined the
flashcube, the automated teller machine, the liquid crystal display and the
anti-cancer drug Taxol as a winner of R&D Magazine's annual awards for the
most technologically significant products to be introduced into the
marketplace.
LEAMS is the brainchild of engineer Doug Jung, president and CEO of
Two-Phase Engineering and Research, and called by Alan Sattler of Sandia
Laboratory "one of the most innovative engineers within the geothermal
community."
LEAMS was designed to mitigate toxic carryover and noise that occurs in
geothermal energy development. Its primary function is to safely contain and
clean atmospheric-vented steam of polluting solids, liquids and noxious
gasses, preventing pollution and human injury associated with geothermal
drilling, well testing and power plant start-up processes.
"We are honored and thrilled that we won," said Jung, "We would like to
recognize geothermal industry leaders CalPine and Caithness who understood the
importance of environmental and safety technologies and who were willing to
try something new." Drill Cool Systems, the Department of Energy, the
California Energy Commission and Sandia National Laboratories also supported
the development and marketing of the technology. Although he had faith in his
product from the beginning, Jung, whose work has earned a rating of
"Outstanding" from Sandia National Laboratories, said he did not know if it
would compete successfully in a worldwide arena. Now Jung is hoping the award
will open doors for other products he is developing. "We are currently working
on concepts as cutting edge as that of LEAMS," said Jung. "Our work on the
Boundary Layer Inline Separator Scrubber (BLISS), Brine Enhanced Air Cooling
(BEAC), Two Phase Flow-Meter and Pre-stress Matrix Stimulation (PMS) are just
a few examples."
With entries from all over the world, this coveted award is extremely
competitive. According to R&D Magazine, the 60 independent judges and editors
judging this year's 41st annual awards sought products that change people's
lives for the better, improve the standard of living for large numbers of
people, save lives, promote good health or clean up the environment.
