ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Sept. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company
(NYSE: RTNA, RTNB) has received a $12.6 million fixed-price, incentive fee
contract from Warner Robbins Air Logistics Center, Robins AFB, Ga., to replace
ARC-169 high power amplifiers currently installed on U. S. Air Force AWACS
aircraft.
The contract calls for a 21-month design program that will yield four
initial production units to be flight-tested by the Air Force. Following Air
Force tests, Warner Robins Air Logistics Center is expected to issue a
production order for as many as 156 Raytheon units. The total value of the
contract including design, production, spares and depot support could exceed
$40 million over the next five years.
The ARC-169, installed as original AWACS equipment more than 25 years ago,
amplifies UHF radio signals to provide extended range communications for
airborne platforms. Its replacement, the solid state high power amplifier
(SSHPA), is a derivative of medium power amplifiers built by Raytheon for NATO
during the 1980s. The SSHPA will be a form-fit-function (F3) replacement for
the ARC-169.
"An innovative, two-year collaboration between the Air Force and Raytheon
created a win-win situation for both partners. We will deliver F3
replacements under a sole-source contract, and the Air Force will save the
cost of performing modifications to the AWACS," said Al Perry, vice president
of Raytheon Radios and Terminals.
Raytheon Company, based in Lexington, Mass., is a global technology leader
that provides products and services in the areas of commercial and defense
electronics and business and special mission aircraft. It has operations
throughout the United States and serves customers in more than 70 countries.
Notes to Editors:
* SSHPA subsystems will be designed at Raytheon Radios/Terminals, St.
Petersburg, Fla., and produced at Raytheon's manufacturing facility,
Largo, Fla. The program will employ approximately 50 people.
* The contract resulted from a two-year collaboration among the U. S. Air
Force's AWACS System Program Office at Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass.;
its airplane depot at Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center; the item
manager at Warner Robbins Air Logistic Center; the 552nd Air Control
Wing, Tinker AFB, Okla.; and Raytheon.
