2002 Tekne Awards Finalists Announced; 3M Named Lifetime Achievement Award Winner

  The Minnesota High Tech Association and Minnesota Technology Inc. to Honor
                 Technology Companies and Leaders on Oct. 10

    MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The Minnesota High Tech Association
(MHTA) and Minnesota Technology, Inc. (MTI), in partnership with Medical
Alley, MNBIO and Minnesota Project Innovation, have named the finalists for
the Tekne awards program, the state's third annual celebration of the
companies and individuals who have shown technology innovation and leadership
in Minnesota.
    Finalists have been named in categories that recognize innovation,
development, commercialization and management of technology in Minnesota.  The
Tekne Award 2002 recipients will represent technology innovators who have made
lasting contributions to enhancing the quality of life and competitiveness of
Minnesota.
    3M, St. Paul, will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for
100 years of technology leadership, innovation and expansion.  3M is a global
diversified technology company committed to providing practical and ingenious
solutions to help its customers succeed.

    Categories and finalists include:
    Innovative Development Award
    Honors a business, academic institution or business/academic collaboration
that has demonstrated leadership, dedication and excellence in the development
of an innovation in areas such as digital technology, nano technology, MEMS,
or biotech with the potential to contribute significantly to Minnesota's
technology-based economy.  Finalists are CNT, Minneapolis; Onvoy, Plymouth;
and Seagate Technology, Shakopee.

    Technology Company Award
    Recognizes an emerging company (annual revenues under $50 million) and an
established company (annual revenues of $50 million+) or division within an
established company that exemplifies the entrepreneurial spirit and promises
continued economic growth through technology development and/or application in
the following six categories:
    -- Advanced Manufacturing -- Advanced materials and chemicals, machinery
       and equipment, electronics and components, measuring instruments,
       photonics, optics and lasers, and computer and peripheral equipment.
       -- Emerging company finalist is Minnetronix Inc., St. Paul.
       -- Established company finalists are 3M, St. Paul; Donaldson,
          Minneapolis; and Pemstar, Rochester.
    -- Communications -- Communication services, networking and communications
       equipment and wireless.
       -- Emerging company finalist is Bermai Inc., Minnetonka.
       -- Established company finalist is Onvoy, Plymouth.
    -- IT/Software -- Software, application development and other IT services.
       -- Emerging company finalists are HighJump Software, Eden Prairie;
          Magnum Technologies, Eden Prairie; and Nistevo Corp., Eden Prairie.
       -- Established company finalists are Digital River, Eden Prairie; Retek
          Inc., Minneapolis; and Stellent Inc., Eden Prairie.
    -- Life Sciences -- Industrial and agricultural biotechnology,
       pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, life sciences research and medical
       devices and equipment.
       -- Emerging company finalists are Atritech Inc., Plymouth; HeartStent
          Corp., Minneapolis; and Micronet Medical Inc., St. Paul.
       -- Established company finalists are American Medical Systems,
          Minnetonka; Hutchinson Technology, BioMeasurement Division,
          Hutchinson; and Upsher-Smith Laboratories Inc., Minneapolis.
    -- Leadership -- Outstanding individual who, beyond a specific innovation
       or achievement, has contributed significantly to Minnesota's technology
       expansion.
       -- Emerging company finalists are Dan Carr, founder, president and CEO,
          The Collaborative, Minneapolis; Dr. Layne V. Hopkins, president,
          Technology Plus of Mankato Inc., Mankato; and Stephen Shank, CEO,
          Capella Education Co., Minneapolis.
       -- Established company finalists are Janice Aune, CEO, Onvoy, Plymouth;
          Steve Ladwig, president and CEO, Retek Inc., Minneapolis; and Mike
          Wilens, president, West Group, Eagan.
    -- Technology Consulting -- Innovative enablement of a client's use of
       technology.
       -- Emerging company finalists are Enventis Telecom Inc., Plymouth;
          Magenic, Golden Valley; and SafeNet Consulting, Minneapolis.
       -- Established company finalists are KPMG Consulting Inc., Minneapolis;
          Kroll Ontrack Inc., Eden Prairie; and Unisys Global Outsourcing,
          Eagan.

    The Tekne Awards will be presented Thursday, Oct. 10, beginning with a
reception at 4:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. and the awards ceremony
at 7:15 p.m. at the Minneapolis Convention Center.  Daniel Goldin, former NASA
administrator, will deliver the keynote address.
