BEA WebLogic Server First J2EE Application Environment to Support Apache Beehive, Apache XMLBeans and the Eclipse Web Tools Platform

New Code Designed to Allow Developers to 'Blend' J2EE and Open Source
Applications, Resulting in Faster Development Times, Quicker Deployment
                            and Greater Stability

BEAWORLD 2005, SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- BEA
Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BEAS), a world leader in enterprise infrastructure
software, unveiled the first J2EE application environment to support all major
open source frameworks at its flagship global forum, BEAWorld. This blended
framework approach is designed to let developers write to one or more open
source Java frameworks, helping to turn frozen IT assets into enterprise
liquid assets. BEA also announced the availability of customer support for the
Spring framework, as well as certifying Spring for WebLogic Server.
By being able to mix and match the best components and deployment
platforms, developers can lower development and maintenance costs while
increasing responsiveness to changes in business needs. The BEA WebLogic
Platform is designed to allow applications to be built or blended from leading
open source frameworks, including: Apache Beehive, Apache XMLBeans, Spring,
Tomcat and the Eclipse Web Tools Platform. The certified version of the Spring
Framework will initially be available on the CodeShare section of BEA's
Dev2Dev web site, http://dev2dev.bea.com/ .
"BEA continues to innovate with the open source community, meeting the
evolving needs of developers by providing a blended development model that is
designed to help developers create stable, new applications which can
integrate with legacy applications for ease of deployment across the network,"
said Mark Carges, chief technology officer, BEA Systems, Inc. "We are
extending beyond WebLogic clustering, running the JVM closer to the hardware
to help enable on-demand resource allocation and smart provisioning, creating
a highly available and scaleable enterprise. We also continue to distinguish
WebLogic Server from other application servers for its openness, simplicity
and choice for the developer."
By leveraging commercial experience and innovation around J2EE,
Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), XML, Web Services and metadata, BEA is
able to partner with the open source community to lead innovation in the
application infrastructure and service infrastructure markets. BEA is
extending Java into new domains -- telecommunications, edge networks for RFID
and complex event processing. The BEA blended approach is designed to deliver
on the promise of choice for developers to use the tool and framework they
want to rapidly create reliable applications without complex testing.
While the blended environment presents a compelling example of an
alternative programming model to J2EE, it does not replace the real value of
the underlying application server, which is central to the success and
adoption of open source. Open source applications do not reinvent the Java
framework; they build on top of it to create new applications designed to
ensure business events will complement services in a SOA. Among the intriguing
features to which developers can have access via new open source tools are:
distributed transactions; high-speed, asynchronous messaging; legacy
integration; scalability through advanced clustering; performance;
manageability; and monitoring. For more information or to download a copy of

    About Open Source Frameworks
BEEhive is designed to facilitate an architecture based on reusable
components and services reflecting best practices and design patterns. Apache
XMLBeans is designed to let developers take advantage of the features of XML
and XML Schema by having these features mapped naturally to the equivalent
Java language and typing constructs. The updated Eclipse Web Tools Platform
extends the Eclipse platform with a tools infrastructure to support J2EE and
Web-enabled application development.
Apache BEEhive is available at http://beehive.apache.org , Apache XMLBeans
is available at http://xmlbeans.apache.org and Eclipse Web Tools Platform is
available at http://www.eclipse.org.
