SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company
(NYSE: RTNA, RTNB) has received a $17.9 million contract from the San
Francisco International Airport Commission for the installation and testing of
a Precision Runway Monitor (PRM) system at San Francisco International
Airport. The award also includes the production of an additional PRM system
slated for Atlanta's Hartsfield International Airport.
PRM is a standalone, electronically scanned monopulse secondary
surveillance radar that updates essential aircraft target information four to
five times faster than conventional radar equipment. PRM provides air traffic
controllers with a new tool that helps them optimize the frequency of aircraft
arrivals and reduce delays related to airport landing capacity. The system
allows air traffic controllers to maintain a safe rate of aircraft landings on
parallel, closely spaced runways during dense air traffic and adverse weather
conditions.
Implementing newly approved procedures, such as the simultaneous offset
instrument approach, San Francisco's PRM will support concurrent landings on
parallel runways spaced 750 feet apart. The new PRM procedures approved for
the San Francisco airport can also be applied to other key airports that
experience significant weather/capacity related delays.
"During certain times of the year, heavy fog and low stratus clouds
frequently cover San Francisco Airport and cause aircraft delays," said Mr.
Tryg McCoy, San Francisco International Airport's assistant deputy director of
airport operations.
"When the PRM comes on line, it will allow us to land significantly more
aircraft per hour and maintain safe spacing between those planes-even when
weather ceilings drop to 1600 feet."
"Installation of the Raytheon PRM at San Francisco will provide air
traffic controllers with a valuable, new tool to increase capacity and safety
in visibility constrained conditions," said Alan Cooper, Raytheon vice
president of Identification Systems. "The PRM will provide fuel savings for
the air carriers and improved on-time arrival performance for the passengers
that use the San Francisco International Airport."
The new PRM procedures approved for San Francisco's airport could also
benefit Newark, Cleveland, Boston, Seattle, Los Angeles and Miami.

* Including the prototype PRM commissioned at Raleigh Durham International
Airport in 1993, the combined San Francisco/Atlanta award brings
Raytheon's worldwide sales of PRM to eight systems. This includes six
installed at U.S. airports and additional systems at Sydney, Australia's
Kingsford-Smith Airport and Hong Kong's Chek Lap Kok. The FAA has
commissioned the PRM systems at Minneapolis-St Paul and Lambert St Louis
International Airports.
