Evelyn Lauder and the Estee Lauder Companies Spearhead the Global Landmarks
Illumination Initiative Spotlighting Prominent Landmarks Around the Globe in
Pink Lights
NEW YORK, Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Building on its global efforts to raise
awareness of breast cancer over the past eight years, the Estee Lauder
Companies will launch October 2000 Breast Cancer Awareness Month with the most
visually impactful event of the millennium year. On the night of October 2,
cities around the world will join Evelyn Lauder, Senior Corporate Vice
President of the Estee Lauder Companies and Founder of The Breast Cancer
Research Foundation, in the Global Landmarks Illumination Initiative -- the
illumination of the world's most prominent landmarks in pink lights.
Mrs. Lauder, who is heralded for making the pink ribbon a worldwide symbol
of breast health, will kick off the Global Landmarks Illumination Initiative
by switching on the pink lights at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) in
Sydney, Australia (October 2, 7:30 pm Australia time), where she will be
attending the Olympics. Estee Lauder spokesperson Elizabeth Hurley will turn
on the pink lights at the Empire State Building in New York City (Media photo
opportunity 10:00am, NY time-actual lighting at sunset).
Other significant landmarks that will be illuminated in pink include Sky
Dome in Toronto, Canada; Tokyo Tower in Japan; Table Mountain in Cape Town,
South Africa; La Diana Cazadora in Mexico City, Mexico; Copernicus Statue in
Warsaw, Poland; and the Pirelli Building in Milan, Italy. (Attached is a
complete list of monuments, local times and dignitaries involved.)
"We wanted to do something special for the millennium year to raise
awareness about breast cancer, which affects one in eight women in the U.S.,
and many more internationally," said Mrs. Lauder. "With the world coming
together for Olympic gold in September, we wanted to follow in October by
encouraging the world to unite and think pink for Breast Cancer Awareness
Month."
Since 1992, Evelyn Lauder and the Estee Lauder Companies have been at the
forefront of increasing global awareness of breast cancer by distributing pink
ribbons at its cosmetic counters worldwide, encouraging governments to
dedicate a day, week or the month of October to Breast Cancer Awareness,
enlisting support from the world's First Ladies and facilitating press
coverage on the importance of early detection and treatment.
In 1993, Mrs. Lauder established a not-for-profit organization called The
Breast Cancer Research Foundation to raise research funds in a powerful effort
to find a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime. Since then, her efforts
have helped raise more than $20 million to fund breast cancer research at
24 medical institutions in the U.S.
